Which of these consumer-focused leaders is the better addition to your portfolio today?
Investors choosing between Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) and e.l.f. Beauty (NYSE:ELF) face a classic choice between steady restaurant growth and a high-momentum beauty disruptor.
Chipotle relies on its reputation for fresh ingredients and digital convenience to drive volume, while e.l.f. Beauty uses a multi-brand strategy and mass-market retail partnerships to reach younger, value-conscious consumers. Both companies are scaling rapidly while navigating different economic pressures.
Chipotle operates a massive network of company-owned restaurants focused on high-quality ingredients and efficient service across several countries. The company has successfully leaned into digital sales, which accounted for nearly 36.7% of food and beverage revenue in its latest annual report. While expanding its physical footprint, it also relies on third-party delivery services, showing a strong presence among retail stocks in the dining category.
In the fiscal year ended Dec. 31, 2025, revenue reached nearly $11.9 billion, representing growth of roughly 5.4% compared with the prior fiscal year. The net margin, which is the percentage of revenue remaining as profit after all costs, was approximately 12.9%. This resulted in a net income of close to $1.5 billion, demonstrating the company's ability to maintain consistent profitability despite rising commodity prices.
e.l.f. Beauty provides cosmetics through an omni-channel strategy that blends e-commerce with major retail partnerships. The company maintains a small number of critical relationships with Target (NYSE:TGT), Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Sephora, which together represent a significant portion of its sales. Its multi-brand approach, including the recently acquired rhode, allows it to target more of the beauty market.
In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, revenue reached nearly $1.6 billion, a significant increase of approximately 24.6% over the previous year. However, the net margin was roughly 1.6%, leading to a net income of about $26.3 million for the period. This lower profitability relative to previous years reflects the costs associated with integrating new brands and expanding its global footprint.
Chipotle Mexican Grill faces significant risks regarding food safety, as any incident of food-borne illness could severely damage its brand reputation. The company operates in a highly competitive industry and must constantly balance price and quality to retain customers. Furthermore, it deals with supply chain dependencies and complex labor regulations, including potential unionization efforts and scheduling laws that could increase operating costs.
e.l.f. Beauty faces intense competition from established giants like Coty (NYSE:COTY) and L'Oréal (OTC:LRLCF), which could lead to a loss of valuable retail shelf space. The company relies heavily on a supply chain based in China, making it vulnerable to trade policies, tariffs, and logistics disruptions. Integration risks also persist with its acquisition of rhode, which depends heavily on the continued involvement and public image of key personnel.
Chipotle carries a lower earnings multiple but a similar sales-based valuation compared to the faster-growing beauty brand.

Inflation is still stubborn, interest rate hikes are on the table for the foreseeable future, fears over an artificial intelligence bubble are growing, and there are plenty of other potential unknowns that could affect the markets in 2027. That's why, between the two companies, I would rather own the one generating more net income, as that doesn't fully shield a company from downturns but can offer a safety net during volatile times. With $1.5 billion in net income in 2025 compared to e.l.f.'s $26.3 million for fiscal year 2026, Chipotle easily wins that battle.
That said, beyond its ability to generate profits, I also like that it has revenue growth opportunities. Chipotle opened its 4,000th store in 2025, with a long-term goal of operating 7,000 locations across North America. And in the third quarter of 2026 alone, it opened 84 company-owned restaurants. It's also seeing success by leaning into more digital ordering, with digital sales accounting for 38.8% of total food and beverage revenue for the third quarter. In comparison, that percentage was 36.7% in the prior-year period.
For e.l.f., there are also sales growth opportunities, as only 25% of the company's business comes from outside the United States. Still, Chipotle has a larger market it can serve, giving it more sales to convert into profits.
