Chewy: Steady Revenue Growth

Chewy Inc. (NYSE:CHWY) primarily generates its revenue by operating as a dedicated e-commerce retailer providing pet food, animal supplies, prescription medications, and general wellness items directly to domestic pet owners, maintaining an inventory of thousands of unique products.

It recently modified its paid membership program by lowering the annual subscription fee for new and existing customers, and it concurrently expanded the integration of automated self-service tools within its customer service and veterinary operations.

Five Below: Seasonal Revenue Fluctuations

Five Below Inc. (NASDAQ:FIVE) earns the vast majority of its revenue by operating a widespread chain of specialty discount retail stores across the United States, selling a continuously rotating inventory of toys, games, beauty products, athletic apparel, and personal accessories.

It recently appointed a former Ulta Beauty Inc. (NASDAQ:ULTA) executive to its board of directors, while it simultaneously initiated an early holiday shopping campaign featuring a standardized assortment of toys, seasonal gifts, and home decorations.

Why Revenue Matters for Investors

Revenue here refers to the data provider's standardized income-statement revenue line item, and tracking this specific financial metric helps individual investors clearly understand the overall business size, the historical baseline growth trajectory, and the fundamental consumer demand for a given commercial enterprise before any operational costs, taxes, or basic administrative expenses are mathematically subtracted from the final total figure.

Foolish Take

Normally, the first thing to note when examining a company's revenue trend is seasonality: some times of the year have stronger buying patterns than others. For most stocks, compare revenue year over year, by quarter. In retail, seasonality is well-known: with some exceptions, the bulk of retailers' revenue comes in the fourth quarter. Chewy has less seasonality, around the Christmas season, unlike most retailers. The strength of its autoship program mitigates seasonality; however, one would expect its growing focus on veterinary services to further smooth it out.

Five Below, meanwhile, would be expected to have strong seasonality, as a low-priced retailer of many gift-type items.

The chart shows the revenue trend. Even with some year-over-year comparable quarter variation, Chewy shows quite steady revenue, which is unusual for a retailer. Five Below shows that fourth-quarter sales spike each year. But looking at comparable quarters, the business is steadier than the chart may give at first impression: sales are rising comparable quarter over comparable quarter.

Revenue is perhaps the simplest metric investors have to judge a business by. As the chart shows, look for rising revenue, especially over similar periods of each year, and take comparable-quarter stagnation, or worse, declines, as a red flag. In the case of Chewy and five Below, investors should decide if they prefer sequentially steady revenue or more seasonally influenced growth.
