TFI's adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $1.67 in the third quarter.
Truckload operating income reached $100 million as operating ratio hit 86.7%.
Year-to-date free cash flow exceeded $440 million.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, TFI International (NYSE:TFII) reported adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.67. The company generated $116 million in free cash flow during the quarter. That cash flow provides the financial strength to invest during down cycles.
Three things management said stand out.
Management reduced truck count and increased revenue per truck in the truckload segment, where single customers rent full trailers. Higher asset productivity improved the segment's operating ratio, which measures operating expenses as a percentage of revenue.
We have a principle, which is to do more with less, and you really see that here, right? You see more revenue with less trucks.
-- David Saperstein, Chief Financial Officer
The U.S. less-than-truckload business, which combines shipments from multiple customers under the TForce Freight brand, struggled with linehaul inflation and service delays. Management's replacing local operational leadership to fix service discipline across the network.
So, after three years of trying and trying and trying, OK, we said, "We got to change the recipe." Okay? And that's what we're doing now, OK? We're changing the recipe.
-- Alain Bédard, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer
The logistics division provides freight brokerage and specialized transport services without owning heavy fleet assets. Organic growth in specialized end markets pushed the segment's operating margin to 11.3%.
It is a collection of asset-light businesses where we have got really good market share, good barriers to entry, good connectivity with our customers.
-- David Saperstein, Chief Financial Officer
Industrial freight demand remains soft, but tight industry fleet supply should help sustain pricing. Low capital intensity and specialized market focus give the company structural advantages through freight cycles.
We feel very good about 2027 because at one point, the demand will start, the supply will stay constrained.
-- Alain Bédard, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer
Capital allocation focuses on share buybacks and debt reduction when large acquisitions don't offer clear value.
That's why we have a 30-year track record of compounding so tremendously, is just that we generate so much free cash, and we reinvest it.
-- David Saperstein, Chief Financial Officer
