CACI: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Existing program contracts account for 94% of projected full-year revenue.

  • First quarter contract awards reached $4.8 billion with a 2x book-to-bill ratio.

  • Funded backlog grew 15% year over year in the first quarter.

On its first-quarter fiscal year 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, CACI (NYSE:CACI) raised its full-year financial guidance. The company secured $4.8 billion in new contract awards during the quarter. High-margin defense technology sales are driving faster debt reduction and improving earnings visibility.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Existing Program Contracts Secure 94% of Full-Year Revenue

CACI reduced its operational execution risk by securing almost all required annual revenue from existing programs, defined as active customer contracts already under performance. That leaves only 6% of expected sales dependent on new contract wins or recompetes, which are competitive renewals of existing contracts. High existing business content shields full-year performance from federal budget delays.

This significant increase in existing business content which was 83% just last quarter, reflects our successful business development and operational performance and provides increased confidence in our updated guidance, as I mentioned earlier.
-- Jeffrey D. MacLauchlan, Chief Financial Officer

2. Debt Reduction Is Running Two Quarters Ahead of Schedule

The company's rapidly paying down debt following its acquisition of space-sensing provider ARKA, accelerating its deleveraging, or reducing debt relative to earnings. Dropping leverage, or net debt relative to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), back to the low 3x range restores financial flexibility for future acquisitions or share repurchases.

Pro-forma leverage at the end of the first quarter was 3.5 times and we now expect to return to leverage in the low threes in the March quarter of 27. 2 quarters earlier than we had initially anticipated.
-- Jeffrey D. MacLauchlan, Chief Financial Officer

3. Manufacturing Expansion Scales Production for High-Demand Defense Systems

To meet rising military demand for electronic warfare equipment and counter-UAS, or counter-unmanned aerial systems that detect and disable drones, CACI's expanding its production footprint. Management opened a 61,000-square-foot facility in Rochester, New York, to assemble and test specialized hardware systems like its BEAM manpackable counter-drone technology.

The additional 61 thousand-square-foot facility significantly increases our manufacturing space, and expands our capacity to develop, test, assemble, and deliver defense electronics, such as TLS Manpack, BEAM, and others.
-- John S. Mengucci, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Defense spending remains focused on critical technology capabilities, supporting double-digit growth in funded backlog, or contracted work backed by committed government funds.

The priorities we focus on are well funded, and continue to exhibit strong demand signals because they are needs that must be addressed.
-- John S. Mengucci, President and Chief Executive Officer

Multiyear contract wins and proprietary software capabilities provide operational visibility. Management's focusing on capital allocation discipline and organic revenue growth as production capacity scales.

You have heard us say consistently that we view free cash flow per share as the ultimate value creation metric.
-- John S. Mengucci, President and Chief Executive Officer
