Norwegian Cruise Lifts Outlook as Fares Slide: Rapid Earnings Reaction

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • The average trip got shorter, about 7.3 passenger cruise days per guest against 8.5 a year ago, so growth came from more guests, not longer stays.

  • Excluding last year’s $154.5 million debt charge, net interest expense was about flat, so the profit rise doesn’t reflect a lighter debt load.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE:NCLH)topped its own third-quarter targets and raised its full-year adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) outlook to about $2.55 billion. Shares jumped more than 10% in Thursday's regular session. But those targets already called for a sharp drop in yields. Ticket revenue fell as capacity grew, and adjusted profit trailed last year's level, so the turnaround rests on 2027 pricing, while first-half bookings still lag.

What It Means

Norwegian filled its added capacity with cheaper, shorter sailings. Passengers carried jumped 22%, far faster than cruise days. More guests lifted onboard revenue enough to offset the ticket decline. But cruise lines earn their returns on sailings booked months ahead, and Norwegian's first-half 2027 bookings still trail last year, even at higher prices.

The company's GAAP profit rose, but it wasn't driven by operations. Operating income fell about 17% as costs climbed against flat revenue. Net income rose because interest expense nearly halved, almost entirely because last year's quarter carried a large charge for paying off and modifying debt.

Debt raises the stakes. Net leverage, net debt divided by trailing Adjusted EBITDA, is 5.5 times. Management expects 2027 yield growth to accelerate in the second half, when bookings match last year. A back-loaded recovery leaves little cushion if demand softens.

What to Watch Next

Track how much of 2027 is already sold, the booked position, which still lags in the first half. If it hasn't caught up by next quarter, the 1% to 2% yield target depends even more on the second half.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again

In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. If you’d invested $5,000 then, you’d be sitting on $2,799,718 today.*

Now, for the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. It’s a key player in the $1.8 trillion space race, and with the stock recently sitting 20% off its highs, the window to get in early is closing fast.
