ASML Holding (NASDAQ: ASML) stock fell on Monday after leading AI executives from around the industry called for slowing the development of its most advanced models. As of 2:29 p.m. ET on Sept. 14, 2026, ASML shares were down 6.2%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.

Amodei calls for embedded safety monitors and international limits on AI development

The CEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, called for a slowdown in the development of AI in an essay posted to X. He laid out his concerns over the rapid pace of the advanced technology, saying the industry must collaborate to ensure that its capabilities don't run ahead of our ability to understand and control it.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Amodei proposed a series of measures ranging from embedding safety monitors in AI labs to international agreements "in which participating governments agree to substantially limit the overall rate of AI development." He acknowledges that any steps taken would "not be easy" but that "we owe it to humanity to try."

A slower AI buildout could cut demand for ASML's chipmaking equipment

ASML makes the advanced chip-manufacturing equipment used to fabricate the powerful semiconductors that run AI models. If pacing their development reduces model training or data-center construction, chipmakers may need less capacity. That could mean fewer ASML systems.

Still, I think today's reaction is overblown. ASML is still a solid addition to a well-balanced portfolio.
