Apple Stock Nears $319 Breakout as iPhone Event and CEO Change Approach

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Apple closed at $314.16, just below the resistance level at $319.10, as August entered its final weekend. Apple’s CEO John Ternus will take his new role on September 1, after which Apple will then host its major iPhone event on September 9, and the company’s Mac lineup just got a chip refresh. The M6 chip. The fundamentals calendar can’t be ignored and the setup is bullish. However, risks remain with tariffs and component costs.

Q3 Results Still Provide a Strong Fundamental Base

Apple’s last reported financials are for the fiscal Q3 2026. Revenue for the quarter was $109.4 billion, up 16%, and diluted EPS was up 29% to $2.02. Apple also reported June quarter records for iPhone, Mac, and Services, as well as an all-time record for the installed base of active devices.

While the overall sentiments are positive, there are a few remarks to be made with regards to this earnings report. First, gross margin was at 50.1% and tariffs refunds beneficially impacted the gross margin by roughly 2 percentage points while a further positive impact of approximately $0.11 diluted EPS was suffered.

Therefore, investors should be mindful of the benefits of the operational margin and avoid regards this as purely operational. However, after removing this boost, the quarter was impressive in terms of double-digit revenue growth and overall strong cash generation.

September 9 iPhone Event Is the Main Near-Term Catalyst

Apple has scheduled a product event for September 9 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. This event will presumably introduce a new line of iPhones and could very well introduce a foldable iPhone for the first time.

This would give Apple a new expensive phone in a product category that has weak growth in sales of smartphones overall. The foldable angle is relevant because Apple’s hardware strategy relies more on mix than simple unit expansion.

A successful premium product would increase average selling prices and improve margins in a soft handset market. High expectations will exist, so the event must provide enough innovation to differentiate the product in the market..

John Ternus Takes Over as CEO on September 1

On September 1, 2026, John Ternus replaces Tim Cook as Apple's CEO, and Cook assumes the role of executive chair. Ternus will have his first major release as CEO at the September 9 product showcase. Wall Street will monitor how the company balances product launches, AI, supply chain planning, and if Ternus, as a hardware veteran, increases competition in Apple's historically more passive sectors.

M6 Mac Launch Strengthens the On-Device AI Story

Apple's Mac mini and Mac Studio refreshes, launched on August 25, and Mac Mini refreshments are stronger differentiators for on-device AI. The Mac Mini uses Apple's first 2nm processor, the M6 chip. The Mac Studio is now available with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. Apple builds these systems expecting local AI workloads. High memory prices and constrained semiconductors lead to longer manufacturing times, creating problems with demand and thin margins.

EU App Store Changes Reduce One Regulatory Overhang

Visibly improved policies also accompanied Apple's changes to the EU App Store on August 18. Beginning October 1, the Core Technology Fee will be replaced by a 5% Core Technology Commission for all digital transactions in apps distributed outside the App Store, and changes will be made to the payment terms.

While the new format may impact some Services, it reduces the long-standing EU regulatory uncertainty.

Tariff Risk Is Back in Focus

Tariffs are back on everyone's mind after US officials began drafting new policies that may target technology products containing semiconductors. A final policy has not been issued, but if implemented, the policy will impact Apple's supply chains where they engage in outsourced production.

While it appears that some of the supply chain issues from inflation and shortages may be addressed over time with the US manufacturing push, these issues, along with increased production costs remaining for the holiday season, indicate a risk to Apple's earnings.

Apple Technical Analysis: $319.10 Is the Breakout Level

The provided 2-hour chart displayed AAPL at $314.54, and the last completed August 27 session closed at $314.16. The closing price differential does not impact the structure. Apple continues to respect the rising trendline from the late-June low and plenty of buyers have formed around the $309-$311 range.

Price has reclaimed the moving-average cluster at $311.74-$312.22, which maintains the bias in a favorable short-term position. The immediate resistance zone is $315.68-$319.10. A 2-hour closing price above $319.10 would confirm a breakout and $330.21, with further resistance at $343.72.

The RSI at 58 is above the signal line at 53 and is below the 70 overbought level. Below $311-$312 is the first support cluster. If the rising trendline is lost, the recovery would weaken and price would then be vulnerable to $301.01, with further support at $292.90.

Key Levels

  • Last closed price: $314.16
  • Immediate Support: $311.00-$312.22
  • Breakout Resistance: $319.10
  • First Upward Target: $330.21
  • Further Upward Target: $343.72

What is the biggest Apple catalyst next week?

The first major catalyst is the September 1 CEO transition to John Ternus. The next significant catalyst is the expected launch of Apple’s iPhone, which is scheduled to happen on September 9 along with potentially the launch of their first foldable iPhone.

Is AAPL bullish heading into September?

In the short term, the setup remains in Apple’s favor as AAPL trades above $311-$312 and the rising trendline. If $319.10 is taken out, the target is set at $330.21 and potentially $343.72.

Bottom Line

Apple has solid fundamentals as they enter September with the approach of a big product launch as well as CEO Tim Cook’s transition. Recent earnings show broad revenue strength. The M6 Mac mini, and the September 9 event give investors some new hardware catalysts. Investors are worried about costs caused by tariffs, inflation, and AI. Rising component costs and high expectations for new products are also hard to predict. The technicals indicate that most investors are focused on $319.10. A clean breakout would confirm the bullish structure. If Apple falls below $311, it will become a very bearish scenario.
