However, analysts still have a generally bullish outlook for where SpaceX stock could trade by August 2027.

A $3,000 investment in SpaceX

For simplicity, we'll use that Aug. 24 closing price of $135 as the basis for this $3,000 investment. Purchasing $3,000 worth of SpaceX stock at that price would yield roughly 22 shares, in addition to a fractional share.

The median one-year price target for SpaceX among 40 analysts tracking the company is $217 per share, according to CNN. If SpaceX hits that target, the $3,000 investment at $135 per share would be worth roughly $4,821, an approximately 61% return.

That suggests strong upside potential ahead. But there are also some bearish scenarios to consider.

How low could SpaceX go?

Among the analysts who track the stock, the lowest 12-month price target is $75. But there's an even lower potential price that, if history repeats itself, is worth considering.

When Meta Platforms went public in May 2012, four months after its highly anticipated IPO, the stock price was down by 53%. That marked the bottom for the stock. There's nothing that says SpaceX stock will follow the same pattern, but if it does, a 53% drop from its IPO price of $135 would leave it trading at $63 per share. That said, Meta shares also climbed by 140% in the 12 months following that bottom, according to Barron's.

The difficulty in setting SpaceX price targets

Analysts' price targets are never perfect predictions of the future. They are informed speculation based on each analyst's calculations and expectations. As such, they can serve as a sentiment gauge that can help investors weigh potential risk against potential reward. That said, when it comes to SpaceX, it is exceptionally difficult to judge where it might trade over the short term because the business has so many moving pieces.

It's known as a space company because of its dominant rocket launch business and its satellite deployments. Still, SpaceX management believes it has a $28.5 trillion total addressable market, and sees $26.5 trillion of that potential being in artificial intelligence (AI). Then there's the merging of space and AI technology, with SpaceX planning to start launching orbital data center satellites as early as 2028.

Even with all of the moving pieces, however, the median price target of $217 still indicates that the analysts tracking SpaceX are generally bullish on its upside potential. But SpaceX remains a stock that's better suited to more aggressive investors who can handle extreme price swings and accept them in exchange for the possibility of long-term appreciation.
