Apple Plans First All-New Mac Mini in Two Years, Potentially Cook's Last New Product

TradingKey - Apple (AAPL) is reportedly preparing to launch its first updated Mac mini in nearly two years, with the new product potentially debuting within the next few days, possibly even ahead of the September iPhone launch event.

According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, Apple has tested versions of the Mac mini powered by M5 and M6 chips. The product refresh comes at a time when demand for the current Mac mini has surged noticeably, as the compact desktop computer is increasingly becoming an important device for users running artificial intelligence applications locally.

However, tightening global memory chip supplies have also put pressure on Apple's production and inventory management, with wait times for some Mac mini orders currently reaching several weeks or even longer.

If the new Mac mini is officially unveiled in the coming days, it could likely be among the last major new products launched during current Apple CEO Tim Cook's tenure. Under Apple's current schedule, Cook will step down as CEO on September 1, to be succeeded by John Ternus, head of hardware engineering. Thereafter, Ternus will oversee Apple's product launches, including the foldable iPhone.

This Mac mini refresh is also linked to Apple's ongoing effort to push forward domestic US manufacturing. Apple previously announced that it will start Mac mini production in Houston, Texas, in late 2026. Cook also visited the relevant factory alongside US government officials earlier this month. As Apple further expands its US manufacturing footprint, the Mac mini is seen as one of the key products in that strategy.

Apple is expected to hold its annual iPhone launch event in September, with the market generally anticipating the date to fall on September 9. At the event, the company may introduce its first foldable iPhone along with the iPhone 18 Pro series, while also updating its Apple Watch and AirPods product lines.
