Apple Stock Outlook: AAPL Faces CEO Change, iPhone 18 Launch and EU Risks

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) closed at $311.02, with a slight dip of 1.75% following a previous increase of 2.19%. The stock is now approximately 10% off its all-time closing peak of $339.79, hit on July 28. Apple's market cap today is approximately $4.6 trillion, and its 52 week range is $223.78 to $344.57.

The recent volatility is a result of investors factoring in three big developments at the same time: the imminent departure of CEO Tim Cook and the regulatory settlement in Europe announced recently by Apple, along with heightened expectations of the company's largest product event of the year.

Tim Cook’s Final Days as CEO Approach

Apple is set for the most consequential leadership shift in over a decade. Tim Cook will retire as CEO on August 31, and the Board has officially endorsed a succession plan that will have senior vice president of hardware engineering, John Ternus, take over the CEO position on September 1.

Since taking the reins as CEO in 2011, Cook has presided over Apple’s growth from a roughly $350b company to one worth over $4 trillion. Upon retirement, Cook will take the position of Executive Chairman, in which he will focus on working with policymakers worldwide.

Ternus has remained at Apple for the last 25 years. He moved into hardware engineering from the product design team in 2021, and he will become the first CEO of Apple to combine a product and engineering background with Steve Jobs as the only other example.

Cook has mentioned Apple’s impressive first-half performance, his confidence in Ternus, and the company’s product roadmap, as reasons for picking.

September 9 Event Expected to Spotlight iPhone 18 Pro

It is most likely that Apple will hold the first of their annual fall hardware events in early September. One of the bigger announcements will most likely be Apple’s first foldable iPhone and iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple may be planning to release its standard iPhone 18 in the spring of 2027, a substantial change from their usual pattern. Analysts would also have to adjust their expectations for estimating holiday quarter sales.

The event will also be a significant day for Ternus. It's supposed to be his first appearance in the role of CEO in public, and the opportunity for investors to see his communication style and how he will market Apple's next generation of products.

Compared with Cook’s polished public presence, Ternus has generally maintained a quieter, engineering-focused profile. Investors will, therefore, be watching not just what Apple launches, but also what Ternus does in the spotlight.

Apple Settles EU App Store Dispute

Apple has made progress in resolving one of its long-standing European regulatory disputes. A settlement has been reached with the European Commission regarding adjustments to Apple’s App Store commission system.

As part of their settlement, developers who select users to payment systems or purchases outside the App Store will be charged a lower commission. This settlement addresses a main issue of concern for Apple and European regulators regarding the EU’s Digital Markets Act.

The settlement provides certainty for potential fines and future focus on Apple’s high margin Service division. Also, new channels to payments and distribution of applications in Europe will be Permissible. However, the main question remains: whether other jurisdictions will follow.

Fiscal Q3 Results Showed Strong Growth

Investors also had plenty to consider as Apple released its latest quarterly results. The company's revenue stood at $109.4 billion, or 16% higher than a year prior, and diluted earnings per share increased 29% year-over-year to $2.02.

iPhone revenue rose 22% from the same quarter a year ago. Cook indicated that growth would have been even higher if supply had not been a problem.

Apple also gave up on its previous net-cash neutral goal. The company instead will manage cash separately from debt, affording greater flexibility in terms of investment in research and development, capital expenditure, and potential acquisitions.

As Apple strives to solidify its role in generative AI and catch up with other companies like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, that flexibility might prove even more valuable in the future.

Revenue of Apple is now in a trailing 12 months of about $466.8 billion, trailing twelve-month gross margin is approximately 48.65% while net margin is 27.51%. The last reported quarter (Q3 2026) posted a gross margin of 50.1%. This margin is 2 percentage points higher than previous quarters due to tariff refunds. These results show the company's financial strength as the leadership position is transitioned.

Valuation Leaves Little Room for Mistakes

Apple's current P/E ratio is 36.5, while the forward P/E is 34.4. That means the stock is significantly overvalued compared to its trend and means that investors have limited grounds for disappointment.

Bulls are continuing to cite Apple's Services growth, customer loyalty, and the possibility of a hardware upgrade cycle as reasons to be bullish. But concerns persist over the company's AI advancements and high valuation.

The switch to Ternus will thus be closely monitored. Investors will be interested in whether Apple can keep its momentum going on products and keep its capital in order as well.

Analyst Targets and What Comes Next

The average one-year price target for Wall Street is approximately $324, which implies approximately 4% upside from current levels. With the relatively modest target, much of the near-term optimism might already be factored into the stock price.

Although technically, the resistance line is still near the July highs at around $340, the $301 to $310 range has become a key support point.

Investors have several developments that may influence Apple's next steps. These include any further details before the September product event, Ternus' first public comments as CEO, the EU settlement effect on Services revenue and Apple's fiscal Q4 earnings report, which is expected on or around October 28.

Apple has a lot of catalysts to go along with the new leadership, big product announcements and regulatory changes expected in the next several months — and lots of reasons to be wary of investing.

Apple Technical Analysis: AAPL Tests Rising Trendline as $301 Support Becomes Critical

Currently, Apple is priced at $311.34 on the 2-hour chart, having pulled back after reaching $319.50 in the previous rebound. We see a longer-term recovery structure, however, Apple is now testing a confluence of a rising trend line and some moving averages.

The price is currently moving between the two moving averages at $311.21 and $312.33 respectively. If AAPL recovers above this confluence of support, the $319.50 target price can be attacked, and a break above that level can allow AAPL to climb to $330.21 and $343.72. The levels above offer some mild support to the current levels, but a break of the rising trend line will remove the $301.01 level. A break of $301 will lead to a correction to $292.90.

In my opinion, AAPL should remain neutral to bullish until the $301 support level is breached. A break of $301 will lead to a more bearish outlook.

FAQs:

1. Is Apple stock a buy right now?Apple is valued high, but its financials are strong and so are the catalysts in the near future.

2. What is the biggest catalyst for Apple stock? The launch of the iPhone 18 this September and John Ternus taking over as CEO are likely the biggest short term catalysts.

Bottom Line:

Apple has changed CEOs, has upcoming regulatory changes, and major iPhone launches. AI competition and a high valuation mean the stock could drop unless executive team is on top of everything. However, Apple has plenty of earnings and a large base of users.
