Open Enrollment Is Just Weeks Away -- Is It Worth Switching to Medicare Advantage?

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • A Medicare Advantage plan can lower premiums and bundle extras, like dental and vision, but restricts your choice of providers.

  • In some states, if you leave Medicare Advantage and want to switch to Medigap, underwriting may be required, particularly after trial rights expire.

  • Consider switching only if the plan you’re moving to is a better fit.

The Medicare open enrollment period for 2027 is Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, and it's during that time that you can choose your plan for the upcoming year. Even if you've had Medicare coverage for years, the sheer volume of options can make it all rather confusing.

One of your options may be a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) -- a private alternative to Original Medicare that covers at least what Part A and Part B cover, but often bundles in extra benefits. Still, the plan isn't for everyone. As you make decisions about healthcare in retirement, it's a good idea to consider both the pros and cons of Medicare Advantage.

Pros of Medicare Advantage plans

Here are some of the selling points that make Medicare Advantage plans popular:

  • Often cheaper upfront: Many Advantage plans have a low or $0 monthly premium, which can make them less expensive than pairing Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement, particularly for those who remain healthy.
  • Extras: Many Advantage plans offer dental, vision, hearing, fitness programs, and sometimes over-the-counter (OTC) allowances that Original Medicare doesn't cover.
  • Annual out-of-pocket maximum: As you plan for retirement, you may not be sure how much to budget for medical care each year. Medicare Advantage can help by including a yearly cap on in-network out-of-pocket costs, allowing you to budget for the worst. While the cap may be high, it's a financial safety ceiling that Original Medicare alone doesn't offer.
  • Potential savings vs. Medigap: Analyses suggest that the typical Medicare Advantage enrollee may save between $1,800 and $2,600 annually in premiums compared with a Medigap policy, making it an appealing option for those on a fixed income.

Cons of Medicare Advantage plans

Because no plan is perfect, here are some of the disadvantages of Medicare Advantage:

  • Network restrictions: Because you generally must use in-network providers, out-of-network care can be much more expensive or not covered at all. This differs from Original Medicare, which most providers nationwide accept.
  • Potentially high out-of-pocket cost: In 2025, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) raised the maximum allowable out-of-pocket limit for in-network services to $9,350. That doesn't mean all plans implement such a high limit, but it's now legally allowable.
  • Possible delays: Many Advantage plans require prior authorization for services such as specialist care, imaging, or surgery. This prior authorization can delay or even deny treatments that Original Medicare would have typically covered without pre-approval.
  • Limited coverage for travelers: If you travel extensively or have a home in another part of the country, many Advantage plans are tied to a local service area, meaning medical care you receive while traveling is out-of-network.
  • Could be harder to switch back to Medigap: In some states, if your health declines after you start an Advantage plan, it can be difficult, expensive, or even impossible to get a Medigap supplemental plan later if you decide to switch back.

As attractive as any plan may appear at first blush, your best bet is to dig into the details to learn which plan fits your real-life needs best.
