Why Cardano Was on Fire Today

Key Points

  • This was fueled to a significant degree by top-down factors.

  • It also helped that the coin was included in the crypto ETF of a well-known asset manager.

Bolstered by a sustained rally and some price-boosting news of its own, Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) was quite the popular cryptocurrency on the last workday of the week. In late-afternoon trading on Friday, the coin was up more than 16%.

Bracing tailwinds

Led by their most popular member, Bitcoin, cryptos tend to move in concert as an asset class. That's because, for the most part, the macroeconomic and other factors that move one tend to affect all.

And over the past few days, the factors have certainly been in their favor. On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the Treasury would greatly expand its repurchases of long-term government bonds. This will at least double to $4 billion per instance, up from the current $2 billion.

That made risky financial assets, such as digital coins and tokens, more attractive. It also sparked a rally that was ongoing as we headed into the weekend. On top of that, President Trump strongly signaled continued support for crypto at a high-level White House summit with industry leaders.

Finally, Cardano was added to the T. Rowe Price Active Crypto ETF. This isn't the coin's first time at the ETF rodeo; however, it's significant because the fund's manager had indicated inclusion on launch, which occurred in July, so it has now followed through on this. Also, Active Crypto has a rather stringent set of criteria for inclusion in its portfolio.

The double whammy

Zooming out some, it feels like crypto has suddenly been jolted awake after a long slumber.

Those latest top-down developments show the industry has plenty of support from the politicians and policy-makers currently running this country. Meanwhile, Cardano gets a boost in reputation from joining a noted asset manager's specialty crypto ETF. I'm not generally a monster crypto bull, but the future does look bright for Cardano just now.
