Stock Market Today, Aug. 5: Shopify Soars 17% After Beating Q2 Estimates, Raises Q3 Outlook

Source The Motley Fool

Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP), a cloud commerce platform for merchants and brands, closed at $144.24, up 16.98%. The premarket beat-and-raise quarter and stronger AI-driven merchant activity pushed the stock higher, and investors are watching revenue, margin guidance, and cash flow. Trading volume reached 40.5M shares, coming in about 263% above its three-month average of 11.2M shares. Shopify IPO'd in 2015 and has grown 8,385% since going public.

How the markets moved today

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) closed at 7,722, down 0.19%, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) finished at 26,363, down 0.83%. Among e-commerce software and commerce platform services peers, Etsy (NYSE:ETSY) closed at $85.82, down 0.71%, while eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) closed at $111.15, up 1.40%.

What this means for investors

Shopify stock soared today after the company rocketed past analysts’ expectations as it delivered GMV, revenue, gross profits, and free cash flow growth, each in excess of 30%. Management also guided sales to grow by a low-thirties percentage again in Q3.

President Harley Finkelstein explained, “AI-driven traffic and also orders to Shopify stores tripled year-over-year in the second quarter,” highlighting that AI seems to help, rather than hinder, their operations. Furthermore, Shopify’s AI-powered Sidekick assistant was used by merchants to create 36,000 custom apps -- up from 12,000 just one quarter ago. Similarly, the number of daily active merchants using Sidekick nearly quadrupled from last year.

Trading at 89 times FCF and 78 times next year’s earnings, Shopify won’t be mistaken as “cheap.” However, the e-commerce juggernaut continues to fire on all cylinders and seems fully capable of integrating AI into its operations and solutions.
