Meme traders jump on Cyberleek meme token as GTA VI leaks stir controversy

Source Cryptopolitan

Speculators have been buying a Solana meme coin called CYBERLEEK, minted by the same anonymous figure who has spent the past week posting stolen Grand Theft Auto VI footage online.

It is adding another twist to what is seen as a security breach, and the leaks are still being released as August 27, which is the release date for the official GTA 6 gameplay on Netflix, draws near.

A Solana token bolted onto a game leak

CyberLeek is the pseudonym for an unidentified person or group that started releasing alleged GTA 6 development clips around August 18.

Alongside the footage came a cryptocurrency. Blockchain trackers list CYBERLEEK on Solana, and OpenSea labels it “Fighting For Gamer’s Rights.”

The token’s contract address is embedded in the leaked images. So anyone who clicks on the images will be taken straight to the coin.

As Rockstar Games issued copyright takedowns and gaming outlets covered the story, the token continued to gain traction, and mostly for free.

CYBERLEEK reportedly moved $3.6 million within hours of launch.

Coingecko data shows that the token now has a market cap of over $14 million, while the token trades around $0.01913, having declined by over 9% in the past 24 hours.

This is not the first time that Rockstar Games has been breached. The last notable breach was in 2022; however, the latest is a bit different, as it provides proof of a working build.

On CyberLeek’s site, users reportedly voted on which clip dropped next by spending crypto. Another clip that came out later showed Jason inside a game store, carrying a watermark about ownership and resale rights.

A manifesto dressed as consumer activism

CyberLeek has stated that their campaign is a protest. There is a manifesto on CyberLeek’s website that is against digital-only game sales, paid single-player DLC, and titles that stop working once servers close.

So, CyberLeeks wants no digital preorders, no fake single-player DLC, and preservation of single-player content.

Proceeds from the token would be used to fund infrastructure, cybersecurity, and an unspecified “special project.” However, none of these projects have been verified or backed by a public roadmap.

Stop Killing Games wants no part of it

The manifesto name-checks the Stop Killing Games movement, which YouTuber Ross Scott launched in April 2024.

However, the movement rejected that association on August 19, writing on X via its official account, “The reason he is leaking GTA 6 is his meme coin, this is all but helpful.”

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent, is also working on getting the leaker’s identity. The company reportedly subpoenaed Discord for records tied to servers, including CYBERLEEK.

There are also subpoenas that are reportedly aimed at X and Google. Rockstar has not authenticated the footage or named anyone responsible.

What buyers are actually getting

CYBERLEEK has been termed a highly speculative meme coin with no operating history.

CoinGecko notes that trackers have flagged the contract as a scam. There is no established Rockstar affiliation, the operators are unidentified, and the stated use of funds is unconfirmed.

GTA 6 launches November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per GameSpot.
