New Zealand Dollar stalls as China slows down

Source Fxstreet
  • NZD/USD is pinned near the 0.5900 region as opposing forces cancel each other out.
  • The Reserve Bank of New Zealand hiked rates in July, and markets expect another hike in September, giving the Kiwi an underlying bid.
  • China's slowing industrial output and retail sales cap the upside and see the Kiwi lagging the Aussie.

NZD/USD is close to flat on the day, holding the 0.5900 region and unable to join the broader move against a soft US Dollar (USD).

On its own, that hawkish lean should be helping the Kiwi, and so should the weak Dollar. The Greenback is soft across the board, with August's run of cooler US data trimming bets on a Federal Reserve (Fed) move and a Reuters poll now pointing to rates on hold for the rest of the year.

On China, weekend data showed both industrial production and retail sales slowing and missing forecasts, a soft read on activity in New Zealand's largest export market. For a commodity currency tied to Chinese demand, that is enough to offset the support from the RBNZ and the Dollar, and it explains why the Kiwi is stuck flat while the Australian Dollar leads the majors.

The renewed escalation threat out of Iran, and the firmer oil prices that come with it, cut both ways for New Zealand. Higher energy costs are a drag on a net importer, but they also feed the inflation the RBNZ is now leaning against, which if anything reinforces the case for a September hike.

Chart Analysis NZD/USD

Short-term technical analysis:

On the 4-hour chart, NZD/USD trades at 0.5903, holding a modest bullish bias as it consolidates above the 20-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) at 0.5877 and the 100-period SMA at 0.5855. The clustering of these SMAs below price suggests a constructive underlying tone, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 60 points to firm but not overstretched upside momentum as the pair grinds higher from recent lows.

On the topside, initial resistance is located at 0.5907, followed by 0.5911 and then 0.5922, where a break would open the way toward 0.5965. On the downside, immediate intraday support emerges at 0.5899 ahead of the 20-period SMA at 0.5877, with the 100-period SMA at 0.5855 acting as a deeper floor that would need to give way to undermine the current constructive structure.
