One of the Fastest-Growing Segments of the Crypto Market Involves Artificial Intelligence. Here's the 1 Cryptocurrency I'm Buying Now.

Key Points

  • AI agents are increasingly making trades and purchasing goods and services using cryptocurrency.

  • Solana is already home to a significant amount of that AI-driven activity.

  • Its speed, cheapness, and throughput likely mean that it'll capture even more AI commerce activity in the future.

  • 10 stocks we like better than Solana ›

As artificial intelligence (AI) agents handle more economically valuable tasks for their developers and owners, they'll spend more money and perhaps even spin up services intended for use by other agents. That's why AI is one of the fastest-growing and most anticipated areas within crypto.

For exposure to growth from AI agents in crypto, I think Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) is the best choice at the moment. I plan to add more to my existing position in the coming weeks despite being skeptical of the coin as recently as a few months ago. Here's why.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Solana already handles more than a third of AI agent payments in crypto

AI agents are programs, most typically based on large language models, that can act to accomplish high-level goals without a human user approving each step along the way. That makes them very capable tools for accomplishing financial and investing tasks, but it also means that many of the activities agents can perform require payment for resources such as information.

Today, many agents with crypto wallets can pay for those resources on their own without bugging their owner via x402, which is a standard that lets websites charge agents tiny sums in stablecoins in exchange for access to data or services. Most payments for data access are very cheap, but the most valuable tasks agents can do often require many different pieces of data from multiple sources, some of which may be behind paywalls.

Making those many tiny payments is most seamless when the agent runs on a fast, cheap blockchain, which is precisely Solana's specialty.

Since its Alpenglow upgrade went live in late October, transactions on the network finalize within 150 milliseconds and usually for less than a penny in transaction fees. And that's a big part of why cumulatively the network has settled 67.3 million (34.5%) of the 195.2 million total payments initiated by AI agents as of Oct. 28.

Furthermore, its agent registry gives agents on-chain identities and reputation records. So if someone wants to hire an agent on Solana, they can check its reputation record first.

The economic footprint of agents is still small, for now

Solana holders get upside to agents working on the chain via network fees; half of each base fee is destroyed to offset the coin's supply expanding each year.

Solana's total chain fees rose 53% quarter over quarter to reach $62.9 million in the third quarter of 2026. At today's prices, the base fees on those 67.3 million payments total about $34,174. While in absolute terms that sum isn't much in comparison to the coin's market cap of $60.3 billion, it'll continue to grow as agents become more sophisticated and more widespread, and the pace is likely to accelerate from here.

And while it remains to be seen exactly how much growth agents could drive in the future, so far it appears that the answer is a lot more than there is today. That's why I'm buying Solana right now.
