Brian Armstrong sounds alarm as Coinbase prepares for Bitcoin quantum security

Bitcoin quantum security moved to the forefront after Coinbase unveiled a detailed plan to prepare Bitcoin infrastructure for future advances in quantum computing.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said quantum computing does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin. However, Armstrong stated that preparation must begin well before machines become powerful enough to challenge existing cryptography.

The announcement coincided with the launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, which includes BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Blockstream, Galaxy, and Coinbase.

Bitcoin quantum security plans expand across Coinbase

Armstrong said the industry should prepare now because no one knows when a fault-tolerant quantum computer will become available. He noted that Coinbase created its Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain earlier this year to evaluate realistic risks and recommend practical actions.

The advisory board concluded that current blockchain cryptography must be replaced. It also stated that migration, rather than cryptographic design, presents the largest challenge because millions of users and decentralized networks must coordinate upgrades.

Coinbase said its proprietary CoreKMS currently protects about 99.9% of the digital assets it holds in custody. The company has already started developing PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version of its key management platform.

Within the next year, Coinbase expects to introduce an automated signing pipeline using secure enclaves, threshold cryptography, and secret-sharing technologies. According to the company, this system will support post-quantum signature algorithms as blockchains begin adopting new cryptographic standards.

The company also started reviewing every cryptographic system across its business. Coinbase said it is ranking migration priorities based on system importance, exposure, and implementation complexity while establishing milestones that would trigger future upgrades.

Coinbase added that it is also evaluating how Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap affects Base, its Layer 2 network, before developing additional migration plans.

Bitcoin Security Consortium commits funding and engineering support

Coinbase also revealed that it will host a working session with Stanford this August. The meeting will provide an opportunity for Bitcoin Core developers, cryptographers and researchers to discuss real-world strategies to migrate to a future where quantum computers are possible.

The company stated that it plans to hold such sessions regularly to continue technical discussions as the development process continues.

In addition to these discussions, Coinbase was also a founding member of the new Bitcoin Security Consortium. The other members of the consortium are BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Strategy, Block, Blockstream, Galaxy, Anchorage Digital and ARK Invest.

The organizations, as reported by Cryptopolitan, committed a total of $15 million over three years for developers, researchers and organizations developing Bitcoin security. Members will not be responsible for directing Bitcoin development or protocol decisions but will instead determine which projects receive funding.

However, Coinbase stated that its engineers will be directly involved in open source efforts to support proposals such as BIP-360 and other post-quantum migration projects.

Industry preparation continues despite uncertain timeline

The consortium will also share information about Bitcoin security advancements for investors and the public. BlackRock’s Head of Digital Assets, Robert Mitchnick, stated that Bitcoin Core developers are doing valuable work on the project and that more funding would help boost the security of the Bitcoin network in the long run.

Individual financial commitments were not disclosed, nor were any first recipients of financial support announced. It also did not specify if Galaxy’s $5-million Quantum Spending Plan for quantum signatures, wallet migration and security audits is part of the consortium’s total commitment.
