We're now just six years away from a possible 23% Social Security benefit cut, unless the government acts to save it. That's an alarming statistic, but it's also a bit abstract. It doesn't give you a clear idea of how a cut like this would specifically affect your finances.

Here's a closer look at how this change could affect the average Social Security benefit, along with why you probably don't have to worry about this worst-case scenario.

How a 23% Social Security benefit cut would affect the average check

The average Social Security benefit is about $2,089 per month as of September 2026. That gives the typical senior an average annual benefit of just over $25,000. This will increase by 3.6% next year once the next cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) takes effect.

A 23% benefit cut would drop a $2,089 benefit to just $1,609 per month. That would cost the typical beneficiary $5,760 per year, which could be devastating to seniors who rely heavily upon their benefits.

Your exact loss could be smaller or larger, depending on how your current checks stack up to the average. But it's likely to be equally as difficult on your budget. If this were to happen, you'd have to make up the difference with personal savings, a job, or other government benefits. Fortunately, it isn't the most likely outcome.

A 23% benefit cut is unlikely

We can't rule out Social Security benefit cuts entirely, but it's unlikely the government will allow checks to drop by nearly a quarter. This would be a deeply unpopular move, and history shows that when the program has been in trouble, Congress has stepped in to provide more funding.

That will likely happen again, although it may be a few more years before they act. Some in Washington, D.C. have proposed plans, but none have gained traction so far. That's because all the options would cost someone.

It's possible that the government may have to increase the Social Security payroll tax rate to increase funding for the program. This would prevent a benefit cut, but it would leave workers with less money to cover their current expenses.

For now, all we can do is continue saving for retirement and budgeting carefully to help our savings last as long as possible. Once the government decides how it will alter Social Security, it'll be time for everyone to review their retirement plans and adjust accordingly.
