Solana Could Surpass XRP in Market Cap by the End of 2027. Here's a Realistic Timeline for How It Happens.

Key Points

  • XRP's market cap is currently around 36% higher than Solana's.

  • If Solana can continue to win in attracting tokenized assets while XRP lags, it'll likely lead Solana to grow faster.

  • XRP has few bright spots compared to its competitor right now.

In my view, Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) has a very realistic shot at surpassing XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) in market cap by or before the end of 2027. As of Oct. 26, Solana's market cap is $60.4 billion, and XRP's is at $82.5 billion, so to one-up its rival, Solana must gain about 36% while XRP stands still.

The last time the two traded places was when XRP leapfrogged Solana on Dec. 1, 2024, so there's a precedent for Solana being worth more. Here's my projection for what would need to happen, and the timeline in which it might play out.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

Solana must beat XRP by about 2.2% every month

In terms of the monthly bar for performance that Solana needs to surpass over the 14 months before 2028, outpacing XRP by an average of 2.2% per month would do the trick. Whether it meets that pace will depend on whether four trends in Solana's favor continue to hold up.

The biggest driver is that, through mid-2027, tokenized stocks will need to keep flooding onto Solana. Tokenized stocks are shares of companies recorded as tokens on a blockchain. Solana hosts $4.9 billion of transferable tokenized assets as of Oct. 26, so it already has a vast lead over the $642.2 million on XRP's network.

Meanwhile, Solana's network activity and the fees generated by that activity will both need to remain higher than XRP's, and they'll likely need to grow. On Oct. 26, Solana collected $434,092 in daily network fees, whereas XRP's network brought in just $946.

The third driver is Solana's Alpenglow upgrade, which launched on Oct. 21 and finalizes transactions in about 150 milliseconds. That speed is one of the network's major draws, and it'll help to boost its utilization.

Finally, over the coming months, Solana's app ecosystem will need to continue emerging from the recent crypto bear market and perhaps return to strong growth through late 2027.

Having a vibrant ecosystem again will lead to more activity on the chain, and it'll also draw in more outside capital for investment and purchasing services, both of which will make Solana more valuable. XRP's ledger hosts a far smaller app ecosystem, with $38.9 million in decentralized finance (DeFi) deposits versus Solana's $5.7 billion as of Oct. 26.

Should you buy Solana if the flip never happens?

I think that the odds of Solana becoming worth more than XRP by 2027 are somewhere between fair and good. But regardless of whether that happens, Solana is still worth buying today and holding through 2027 and beyond.

It's already one of the leading blockchains in the tokenized stock space, handling 14% of all tokenized stock volume across blockchains in Q3 2026 and 19% in September. That means it's likely to capture a lot of the inflows related to that trend as it picks up speed.

Likewise, its ecosystem is already waking up from the bear market, with a flurry of new projects linking tokenized stocks and other cryptoassets for new combinations of financial exposure.

If XRP's ledger can rapidly grow to reach more than $2 billion in transferable tokenized assets in early 2027, its market cap lead will become harder to surmount.
