Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion, Betting on Open-Model Ecosystem as Stock Rises to $230 Level

Source Tradingkey

Tradingkey - On September 3, Eastern Time, Nvidia (NVDA) announced the acquisition of AI open-source platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, marking Nvidia's largest single acquisition to date. Nvidia stated that the combination will expand Hugging Face's platform scale, strengthen infrastructure, and deliver broader artificial intelligence services to global developers and institutions.

Founded in 2016, Hugging Face reportedly hosts over 18 million developers, researchers, and creators; more than 3 million AI models; over 500,000 datasets; more than 1 million applications; and over 200,000 enterprise users on its platform. These enterprises use Hugging Face to discover, evaluate, customize, and deploy AI models across various fields, including software development, enterprise automation, scientific research, healthcare, education, and industrial sectors.

The deal signifies that Nvidia's footprint across AI chips, models, development tools, and application ecosystems is extending further. By integrating Hugging Face's vast developer community and open model resources, Nvidia is expected to bolster its influence in the generative AI software ecosystem. What Nvidia is effectively acquiring is the core hub of the entire open-source AI ecosystem, including distribution channels reaching millions of developers, technical intelligence on model training trends, and a neutral brand that is difficult to replicate within the open-source community.

Buoyed by the positive acquisition news, Nvidia's share price today tested the $230 mark again, leaving it just about 2.36% away from its all-time high of $236.

Nvidia pledged that following the acquisition, it will preserve the open ecosystem and community nature crucial to Hugging Face's growth. Developers can continue to independently choose: the AI models they use; model development frameworks; cloud computing providers; inference service providers; and underlying computing platforms. Nvidia emphasized that developers building or deploying AI applications on Hugging Face will not be required to use Nvidia computing hardware. Hugging Face will also continue to support open-source models and open-weight models from various model companies, maintaining multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment capabilities. Developers can select the hardware and infrastructure best suited to their project needs.

In addition, Nvidia stated that as the adoption of open models accelerates, Hugging Face has the opportunity to serve global AI developers at a larger scale. Nvidia's infrastructure, engineering capabilities, and global reach are expected to help Hugging Face enhance platform stability, AI model security, inference efficiency, model deployment, and enterprise service capabilities.
