Better Buy: XRP vs. Bitcoin

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Bitcoin's investment case rests on fixed supply and institutional demand, not on one company's product roadmap.

  • XRP still delivers dramatic price swings, but volatility is not a reason to own something for the long haul.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) are two of the largest and oldest cryptocurrencies on the planet. Bitcoin has been around since 2009 and sports a total market value of $1.55 trillion on Sept. 1, 2026. The XRP Ledger launched in 2012, and the coin's market cap is $85.1 billion today.

Both coins have ardent fans and longtime "diamond hands" investors. Bitcoin serves as a nationless currency with minimal inflation. XRP was built to transfer money across international borders. But which one is the better buy right now?

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Bitcoin Price data by YCharts

Start with the three-year tape

Forget the narratives for a second and just read the chart. Over the past three years, Bitcoin roughly tripled. XRP gained roughly 170% over the same period.

So the three-year results are in the same ballpark, but the routes they traveled here are quite different. XRP had the wilder ride, the better story, and the louder fanbase, and it's still in second place.

Bitcoin's $1.55 trillion is roughly 18 times XRP's $85.1 billion. That ratio has stayed fairly stable through a period when XRP had every regulatory tailwind it could have asked for.

XRP already cashed its winning ticket

Back in 2023, XRP investors were looking forward to a very specific catalyst. The long-running lawsuit that had kept Ripple and XRP out of the American market for years was weighing on the coin. A settlement or verdict would surely unlock a golden age of prosperity and soaring XRP prices.

Well, the end of the case really did move the market. Ripple and the Securities and Exchange Commission dropped their appeals in August 2025, Ripple paid $125 million to the U.S. Treasury, and the cloud that had hovered over the token since 2020 finally cleared. XRP jumped to a high of $3.56 per coin.

But XRP won't see that rocket fuel again, and the blast didn't last. Today, XRP trades 62% below last summer's peak. Where will the next surge come from?

Bitcoin's drawdown from its October 2025 record looks worse on the surface but better in a historical context. It peaked at $126,198 last fall, then fell as much as 53%. The prior cycle decline ran 83% after the 2017 top, and the 2021-2022 drawdown stopped at 77%. So far, Bitcoin's 2026 correction is the shallowest on record.

The stablecoin sitting in XRP's chair

But chart patterns never tell the whole story. In the end, the strongest bear case against XRP comes from Ripple itself.

Ripple launched a stablecoin in 2024. RLUSD (CRYPTO: RLUSD) is always a rounding error away from the ideal $1 price, but its trading volume has soared in recent months.

And RLUSD seems to be Ripple's preferred digital currency these days. The company signed 10 major banking partnerships in 2026, and none of them used XRP as the settlement asset. The largest deal of the year was a real-time cross-border tokenized Treasury settlement in May involving JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) and Mastercard (NYSE: MA). The test ran on RLUSD. XRP was involved, but in a supporting role. The coin was used for paying the transaction fee.

XRP is the tollbooth on a very busy bridge. Being on the bridge is not the same as owning the freight, and those transaction fees are tiny. Low fees are a key selling point for Ripple's border-crossing payment services, after all.

Bitcoin's pitch fits on a napkin

The oldest cryptocurrency doesn't need a bank to adopt it next quarter. There will only ever be 21 million coins, and institutions keep showing up at the door. Spot-priced exchange-traded funds pulled in over $3 billion of new cash in August while Bitcoin itself rose 25%.

Analyst targets for year-end 2026 span from Citi's $82,000 to Bernstein's $150,000. It's a wide range, but the firms agree on a rising trend.

XRP is still entertaining, if nothing else

XRP delivers more excitement than Bitcoin at this point. It bottomed out near $0.98 in early August, climbed more than 30% for the month, and touched $1.70 on Aug. 22 before sliding back toward $1.36. Spot-priced XRP funds saw significant inflows in August. There's a Senate procedural vote on the CLARITY Act coming Sept. 15, and that token reacts to headlines like the smoke alarm reacts to my Swedish pancakes. Not that it's an investment-quality metric, but XRP won't bore you anytime soon.

The verdict

Bitcoin is the better buy for a multiyear holding period. Its case rests on fixed supply and a broadening institutional base, not on one company's product decisions.

XRP's case requires Ripple to send value via the token, and the backing organization shows a strong preference for RLUSD. XRP's swings show what the token responds to, and headlines are not a business model.

So Bitcoin is the obvious buy, assuming you believe in cryptocurrencies at all. At best, XRP is a watch list entry, looking for evidence that Ripple's deals ever start using this particular blockchain.
