TradingKey - On Wednesday (U.S. Eastern Time), U.S.-based online real estate platform Opendoor Technologies (OPEN.US) announced the appointment of Kaz Nejatian, former Chief Operating Officer of Shopify, as its new Chief Executive Officer and Board Member. Following the news, Opendoor’s stock surged nearly 40% in after-hours trading, reaching $8.18.

Opendoor Chairman Keith Rabois praised Nejatian as the “only candidate” for the role, highlighting his decisive leadership, deep understanding of AI’s potential to transform business operations, and a rare combination of operational excellence and founder-like insight.

Notably, when Tobi Lütke, founder and CEO of Shopify, appointed Nejatian as COO in September 2022, he also offered high praise, calling him an exceptional leader with strategic vision.

Highly praised

A lawyer by training, Kaz Nejatian is a top-tier product and operations expert. Prior to joining Opendoor, he served as COO and Head of Product at Shopify, where he led product strategy and organizational transformation for the global e-commerce giant. He is widely recognized for driving operational efficiency and scalability, and brings extensive experience in AI-driven business model innovation — earning him recognition as a true “AI-native” executive.

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Opendoor. The company has recently seen its stock surge amid shifting Fed rate expectations and the influence of meme stock dynamics. However, market sentiment remains divided.

Eric Jackson, founder of EMJ Capital, argues that Opendoor is not a meme stock but rather a “cult stock,” emphasizing the disruptive potential of its business model.

In contrast, Erik Gordon, Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, remains skeptical about Opendoor’s AI strategy.

Market analysts believe Nejatian’s arrival could not only help address the company’s past profitability challenges linked to management issues but may also infuse Opendoor with stronger product-oriented thinking and technological depth — a critical step toward long-term credibility and execution capability.
