Microsoft expands Mistral AI partnership with multi-billion dollar deal for AI compute

Microsoft has agreed on Tuesday to pour billions into Mistral’s European data centers and pull the French startup’s models deeper into its own products in a deal aimed at giving enterprises in regulated industries an avenue to run AI on European infrastructure.

Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith, told Reuters that the agreement adds no new equity stake in Mistral. This means the “multibillion-dollar” injection will be based on Microsoft’s spending on AI compute and capacity instead of any new investment in Mistral.

Hardware remains at the core of the arrangement, as Mistral is expanding its European data centers with thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. The tech giant will draw on that capacity to serve its own cloud and AI customers.

Enterprises set to benefit from expansion

Two of Mistral’s models, Medium 3.5 and OCR 4, are now available in Microsoft Foundry, the company’s application-development platform, with Medium 3.5 also launching in Copilot Studio. Customers can run those models in the cloud or on Azure Local, a Microsoft product that lets organizations keep workloads inside their own data centers, even in fully disconnected setups with no outside connectivity.

This is important for banks, hospitals, and manufacturers that are burdened by regulations on where data can live. In a joint interview with Reuters, Vice Chair Brad Smith and Mistral co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch stated that the deal was a way to give regulated businesses more say over how their AI infrastructure is deployed.

“By putting Mistral’s models on Azure Local and on Mistral’s computational capacity, we can combine American and European technology and do it in a way that provides continuous and assured access,” Smith said.

Microsoft and Mistral further relationship

Mistral and Microsoft already partner in different areas, and the increased funding from the tech giant is expected to deepen that relationship. Mensch told the Wall Street Journal that two-thirds of Mistral’s current customers work with the company, and he sees Microsoft’s distribution helping the startup get to more businesses in Europe and beyond.

The two companies will run joint sales efforts across Europe and globally, focused on financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, and other regulated sectors.

Microsoft’s agreement is also related to its European Digital Commitments, which are a set of 2025 pledges the tech giant made to grow data center capacity across the European Union. The tech firm said the setup with Mistral was an extension of how it already operates, which involves mixing its own facilities with leased and third-party capacity from its partners.
