U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.94%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.94%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.96%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.17%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 0.59% or 0.91 points to trade at 155.91 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 0.50% or 1.12 points to end at 227.12 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 0.29% or 1.16 points to 398.25 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV), which lost 4.34% or 10.24 points to trade at 225.97 in late trade. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) declined 3.06% or 5.71 points to end at 180.80 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 2.90% or 2.76 points to 92.39.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which rose 15.79% to 47.74, Air Products and Chemicals Inc (NYSE:APD) which was up 9.52% to settle at 312.69 and Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which gained 8.52% to close at 173.82.

The worst performers were Everest Re Group Ltd (NYSE:EG) which was down 8.47% to 372.55 in late trade, Arch Capital Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ACGL) which lost 6.14% to settle at 107.81 and Assurant Inc (NYSE:AIZ) which was down 5.53% to 186.60 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Scholar Rock Holding Corp (NASDAQ:SRRK) which rose 361.46% to 34.24, Sobr Safe Inc (NASDAQ:SOBR) which was up 165.79% to settle at 10.10 and Snail Inc (NASDAQ:SNAL) which gained 63.73% to close at 1.67.

The worst performers were Vertex Energy Inc (NASDAQ:VTNR) which was down 51.85% to 0.05 in late trade, Trevena Inc (NASDAQ:TRVN) which lost 46.58% to settle at 2.50 and LakeShore Biopharma Co Ltd (NASDAQ:LSB) which was down 39.27% to 3.31 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2011 to 805 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2240 fell and 1056 advanced, while 128 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 17.86% to 22.64 a new 1-month high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.21% or 5.60 to $2,662.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 3.90% or 2.90 to hit $77.28 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 3.84% or 3.00 to trade at $81.05 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.02% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.39% to 148.13.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 102.26.
