On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, Hippo Holdings (NYSE:HIPO) raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to $585 million to $590 million. It's expanding into commercial insurance lines to diversify away from home property risks. Three takeaways from management highlight how this operational pivot shapes long-term value.

1. Existing Renewal Books Drive Casualty Program Expansion

Management expanded casualty gross written premium, which represents the total value of policies sold before reinsurance, to $188 million in the quarter. Rather than competing for new business in a softening market, the business built scale by acquiring established programs with existing renewal bases.

During the year, we added several large existing programs with in-force books, resulting in over 2/3 of the casualty GWP growth coming from renewal business rather than chasing business in a softening market.

2. Automation and AI Lower State Expansion Costs

The company lowered its net expense ratio to around 42% by gaining operating leverage across its platform. Implementing artificial intelligence tools and automated workflows allowed engineering teams to enter 14 new states with far fewer resources.

Additionally, the launching of these new states has also been significant more efficient, requiring 70% less engineering effort per state than our initial 8 states.
-- Rick McCathron, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Proprietary Tech Infrastructure Anchors MGA Partnerships

Management is offering technical infrastructure and claims support to managing general agents (MGAs), which are specialized entities authorized to underwrite insurance policies. Providing these tools to outside programs helps protect underwriting quality while expanding the company's reach beyond its internal program, Hippo Home Insurance Program (HHIP).

One of the ways we intend to support emerging programs and current program partners is by offering a broad suite of services beyond capacity, including claims administration, customer support and technology, which we have built to operate our own MGA, HHIP.
-- Rick McCathron, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Underwriting execution is yielding steady profits, with five straight quarters of positive results. The combined ratio, a key metric measuring underwriting performance, has improved to 98%. On the growth side, expanding casualty lines and national builder distribution partnerships provide long-term channels. And management's strategic focus centers on underwriting discipline, portfolio diversification, and capital allocation.

The result of these efforts is the steadily improved and stabilized underwriting performance, which has now produced a combined ratio underwriting profit for the last 5 quarters in a row with a 98% for the quarter despite experiencing a more normalized cat loss quarter.
-- Rick McCathron, President and Chief Executive Officer

The balance sheet is also in strong shape. GAAP surplus, which represents net worth under standard accounting rules, has surpassed $500 million. That gives the carrier sufficient capacity to fund its organic targets through 2028 without needing fresh capital injections.

We are now into the position where we start accumulating net income and accumulate the capital such that this additional capital can also support the growth into 2028 and beyond.
-- Guy Zeltser, Chief Financial Officer
