Tesla's Cybercab Reaches Dallas in November, and Nevada Just Cleared 5,000 Robotaxis in Las Vegas. Here's the Number That Makes the Bulls Right.

Key Points

  • Tesla targets robotaxi operating costs of $0.30 per paid mile.

  • Theoretically, 1 million robotaxis could generate $20 billion annually.

  • Profitability depends on utilization, pricing, and lower operating costs.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) plans to expand its Cybercab presence in Dallas in November, beyond its initial expanded deployment in Austin. Meanwhile, Nevada regulators have authorized Tesla to operate up to 5,000 fully autonomous vehicles in the Las Vegas area during its first year under the new permit.

But the bigger question isn't how many robotaxis Tesla can put on the road. It's how much money each vehicle can generate.

The magic number is $0.30

During Tesla's Q3 earnings call, CFO Vaibhav Taneja reiterated the company's goal of reducing robotaxi operating costs to approximately $0.30 per paid mile. Tesla hasn't reached that target yet. But consider the potential economics if it does.

During Tesla's 2024 Cybercab unveiling, Elon Musk projected passenger fares of approximately $0.30 to $0.40 per mile. At $0.40 per mile, a robotaxi completing 50,000 paid miles annually would generate $20,000 in revenue. Assuming Tesla achieves its $0.30-per-mile operating cost target, each Cybercab could generate $5,000 in profits (before any additional expenses).

Now consider Tesla's longer-term ambitions. Musk's compensation plan includes a milestone requiring an average of at least 1 million robotaxis in commercial operation over three consecutive months. At that scale, assuming each vehicle completes 50,000 paid miles annually at a fare of $0.40 per mile, Tesla could theoretically generate $20 billion in annual gross passenger fares. Achieving its $0.30-per-paid-mile operating cost target would leave approximately $5 billion in annual contribution before taxes and any additional expenses.

Tesla still has plenty to prove

Those figures are just rough estimates and assume significant vehicle utilization. Tesla also has to demonstrate that its Cybercabs can operate safely, reliably, and profitably at scale.

Management expects robotaxis to begin making a noticeable financial contribution in Q2 2027. So if you're bullish on Tesla, the $0.30-per-mile target is the number to watch. If Tesla can hit that target while maintaining strong utilization and pricing, robotaxis could eventually become a substantial source of recurring profits.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 14x Bigger

Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005.

But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout, a massive technology build-out that Google’s CEO says could be more profound than fire or electricity.

While everyone watches the chip designers, one "backbone" company provides the critical technology that Nvidia and AMD literally cannot function without. We’ve detailed this under-the-radar player in our new AI Playbook.
