On its second fiscal quarter of 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 30, 2026, Cavco (NASDAQ:CVCO) reported net revenue grew 18% year over year to $656 million as demand for factory-built housing outpaced broader industry trends. Long-term investors should care because Cavco is expanding its order backlog and unlocking new commercial demand channels while maintaining cost discipline and balance sheet strength. Three key takeaways from management's comments stand out.

1. Data Center Workforce Housing Is Fueling Backlog Growth

Emerging demand for remote data center workforce housing is providing Cavco with a new growth channel. These single-section units carry higher material costs due to multi-room living layouts, but they expand the order backlog without diluting overall gross margins.

Higher price, higher cost, neutral impact on gross margin percent. The big positive of these incremental workforce housing orders is that they are adding to the backlog.

2. Price Discipline Is Offsetting Raw Material Inflation

Rising input costs for critical construction materials presented operational headwinds during the quarter. Management pushed through local wholesale price increases across its single-section and multi-section residential homes, successfully preserving product profitability.

While differential across operating areas, we saw product pricing increase enough to offset the negative margin impact of growing materials costs.
-- William C. Boor, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Steady Buybacks Underscore Capital Allocation Discipline

Cavco repurchased $30 million of its common stock during the quarter, bringing cumulative buybacks past 20% of outstanding shares over five years. The business generates enough operational cash flow to fund repurchases while preserving $272 million in unrestricted cash for future plant investments.

Since initiating our repurchases just over 5 years ago, we have returned $642 million to our shareholders through buybacks without hampering any strategic growth investment in our plants, greenfields, acquisitions, or otherwise.
-- William C. Boor, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Factory capacity utilization sits at roughly 75%, one analyst pointed out on the call, leaving room to expand production as regulatory momentum and affordable housing shortages boost demand for factory-built homes. Management keeps a close watch on material inflation while maintaining production momentum.

So from a longer term perspective, there remains significant room to reach higher volumes which I think is important given the regulatory momentum and the continuing affordable housing supply deficit.
-- William C. Boor, President and Chief Executive Officer

An average backlog of 8 to 10 weeks gives Cavco operational flexibility as it enters the winter months.

So we really feel like we are well positioned to react as needed to the markets.
