A Major New Solana Blockchain Upgrade Is Now Live. But Here's Why Blockchain Upgrades Rarely Move the Needle for Crypto.

Key Points

  • Crypto traders often buy ahead of a blockchain upgrade and sell when it goes live.

  • Solana's Alpenglow upgrade should speed up transaction finality, but it doesn't solve the blockchain's declining revenue this year.

Solana's (CRYPTO: SOL) Alpenglow upgrade went live on Oct. 21, and it came with quite a bit of hype behind it. Brennan Watt, CEO of Anza, one of the companies that engineers the Solana blockchain, called Alpenglow "the largest, most ambitious blockchain upgrade" since the Ethereum Merge in 2022.

You wouldn't know it from the reaction in the crypto market. Since the upgrade, Solana is down 4%. While blockchain upgrades can be exciting news, they rarely drive immediate gains for a few reasons.

Why blockchain upgrades rarely move the needle

Blockchain upgrades are normally announced well in advance, so they often become "sell the news" events. Traders looking for the best time to buy crypto may front-run an upgrade by buying in the lead-up and then selling when the upgrade goes live. In Solana's case, Anza published the Alpenglow design in 2025. The market was anticipating this upgrade for well over a year.

The market environment itself is another factor, and in the short term, it has a much greater impact on crypto prices than upgrades do. Ethereum is a good example, as it has been through multiple upgrade cycles. Its price rose about 12% in the days after its August 2021 London upgrade, which coincided with a bull market. In September 2022, Ethereum's price fell after the Merge, when it switched to a proof-of-stake system that cut its energy use by more than 99%. That was an even more important upgrade, but it happened during a bear market.

The crypto market has rebounded from its lows earlier this year, but it has been choppy recently, which is likely part of why Solana's price dipped after Alpenglow.

Solana has a demand issue, not an efficiency issue

Alpenglow should significantly improve Solana's transaction speeds. It targets transaction finality in roughly 150 milliseconds, compared to about 12.8 seconds before. However, Solana was already one of the most efficient blockchains, processing over 1,000 transactions per second with transaction fees that cost a fraction of a cent. High performance has been Solana's calling card from the beginning.

More important factors in Solana's price are the levels of revenue and activity on its blockchain, which help explain its performance this year. Network revenue was $141 million in the first half of 2026, down 87.1% from $1.09 billion in the first half of 2025, according to data from 21Shares. Network fees have also been steadily declining, including a 44% sequential decline in Q2 2026.

On a positive note, Solana dominates tokenized spot equity trading on decentralized exchanges (DEXes). It accounted for about 97% of all tokenized spot DEX equity trading in the first half of 2026. Although fee revenue is down this year, Solana still typically leads all blockchains in this area, per DefiLlama.

While Alpenglow improves the Solana network, it's not directly driving any price action and is unlikely to do so. Solana investors are better off monitoring network activity, especially its revenue and fees. If those start trending upward, that would be a better signal for Solana's price than any upgrade.
