Coinbase opens USDC checkout to AI agents for Business customers

This week, Coinbase (COIN) will allow its Business customers to receive USDC payments directly from AI agents. The rollout is part of a three-product push.

Coinbase says the feature fills in the missing pieces of an economy where people are not the ones buying, but software. The update is important for any merchant who wants to attract automated shoppers as customers. And it comes as agent activity is already surpassing human traffic on some of Coinbase’s own developer pages.

Coinbase turns Business accounts into agent checkouts

The business-facing piece runs on x402, the payment standard that Coinbase built and incubated. Settlement is via Coinbase Payments. For merchants using Coinbase Business, there’s nothing else to wire up to turn it on. USDC transactions are instant and cannot be reversed. Coinbase is also bundling reusable payment links and automatic buyer data collection for reconciliation.

Sid Coelho-Prabhu, who leads Coinbase Business, described it as recreating a familiar transaction for a new customer type. Every transaction has two points, he told CoinDesk. The buyer needs a card and a bank account. A seller needs a bank account and a till.

“We are delivering that experience for the new online agentic economy,” Coelho-Prabhu said. An agent reads Coinbase’s developer docs, spins up its own wallet, and arrives ready to spend, in his description. The whole of the merchant’s inventory is accessible through an agent-friendly checkout.

Third is Coinbase Developer Platform’s CDP x402 SDK. It allows a developer to simply bolt agent payment acceptance onto an API, an MCP server, or a web service in three lines of code. The kit is Coinbase’s pre-configured version of the open-source x402 standard. It folds in payment plumbing and suggested extensions that a builder would have to patch together on his own.

Coinbase is counting on early traffic to declare the time is right. Last month, agent visits surpassed human visits to Base’s documentation pages for the first time. That’s a sign that machines are appearing more and more to use online services, Coinbase said.

Agents get plain-English trading in a crowded field

Coinbase broadened Coinbase for Agents. It’s the Model Context Protocol product, which it launched last month, that connects assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude to user accounts.

Exchange customers now have a real-time feed of an agent’s open and active orders. Status, price, and size updates in real time so a person can watch each move as it happens.

The idea is to do hands-off, conditional trading. A user writes a rule in plain language. Then the agent sees the tape and acts.

“Tell it what you want in plain English – ‘buy ETH if it dips 5%,’ ‘sell when my order fills’ – and it watches the market and executes for you,” Coinbase said. The agents are leveraging the same WebSocket market feed that Coinbase offers to institutional trading desks.

The product was launched by the exchange on June 11 to allow AI assistants to trade crypto, pull market data, and pay for services via x402 within limits set by a user. When it launched, Coinbase’s head of AI product Lincoln Murr said x402 was developed in tandem with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near. He said the protocol had processed 75 million transactions and $24 million in volume over 30 days, figures based on a previous Cryptopolitan post.

Clearing an AI agent to trade and spend increases the chances of attacks. Cryptopolitan reports that AI-powered exploits drained $600 million from DeFi protocols in April.

Coinbase’s solution is to isolate portfolios from a user’s main balance and to cap spending, trade size, and the services an agent may touch.
