TradingKey - US industrial giant 3M ( MMM) delivered a second-quarter report card that exceeded market expectations and simultaneously raised its full-year outlook, showing that the company's operational improvement momentum has further strengthened, driven by cost optimization, product upgrades, and strategic positioning in high-growth areas.

Following the earnings release, 3M's shares rose over 6% in pre-market trading at one point.

According to the earnings report, 3M generated revenue of $6.5 billion in the second quarter, up 2.4% year-over-year, topping the market consensus of $6.4 billion. Excluding foreign exchange and other factors, organic sales grew 5.4% year-over-year, reflecting robust demand in core businesses.

On profitability, adjusted earnings per share (EPS) reached $2.40, not only higher than the same period last year but also significantly beating market expectations of $2.24. On a GAAP basis, EPS was $1.78, up approximately 33% year-over-year.

Continued improvement in profitability was a major highlight of this quarter's earnings report, as the company's adjusted operating margin reached 24.9%, up 40 basis points year-over-year and nearing the 25% mark.

Meanwhile, operating cash flow reached $1 billion, and adjusted free cash flow increased to $1.3 billion, reflecting continued strength in business quality and cash-generation capabilities.

During the quarter, the company also returned a total of approximately $1.4 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, continuing its active capital return strategy.

Thanks to first-half performance beating expectations, 3M management further raised its full-year guidance. The company expects adjusted EPS for 2026 to reach $8.80 to $8.95, up from its prior forecast range of $8.50 to $8.70, and topping the market consensus of $8.74.

In addition, the company expects full-year adjusted total sales growth to exceed 4.5%, with organic sales growth likely to top 3.5%. The adjusted operating margin is projected to continue expanding, and full-year operating cash flow is expected to remain between $5.8 billion and $6 billion.

William Brown, 3M's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the company achieved mid-single-digit sales growth in the second quarter while maintaining an operating margin of nearly 25% and double-digit growth in EPS, with all core metrics beating market expectations.

He noted that this reflects the ongoing success of the company's strategic initiatives focused on operational efficiency improvements, product innovation, and business focus, demonstrating that the enterprise is steadily advancing toward higher-quality growth.

Since William Brown took the helm, 3M has consistently pushed forward with organizational streamlining, cost controls, and product portfolio optimization, while mitigating the impact of inflationary pressures on profitability through moderate price hikes.

Meanwhile, the company is actively expanding into high-growth markets like data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure, aiming to cultivate new growth engines from emerging demand. Microsoft's previous announcement that it would adopt certain 3M technologies in its Azure cloud computing and AI infrastructure has further fueled market interest in the company's AI-related business prospects.

However, despite the continuous improvement in operations, 3M still faces headwinds from PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) litigation. The company stated that charges related to major litigation and its exit from the PFAS business had an adverse impact of approximately $0.44 on EPS this quarter, and these legal risks will remain a key focus for investors for some time to come.
