U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.04%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil&Gas, Consumer Services and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.


At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.04%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.20%.


The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.68% or 0.56 points to trade at 21.47 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 1.68% or 0.85 points to end at 51.51 and  American Express  Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 1.65% or 4.31 points to 265.40 in late trade.


Biggest losers included Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 2.43% or 1.96 points to trade at 78.60 in late trade.  Verizon Communications  Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 2.04% or 0.92 points to end at 44.08 and Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) shed 1.90% or 11.18 points to 577.96.


The top performers on the S&P 500 were  Enphase Energy Inc  (NASDAQ:ENPH) which rose 6.31% to 118.53,  Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co  (NYSE:HPE) which was up 5.69% to settle at 18.21 and  Moderna  Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which gained 4.08% to close at 71.99.


The worst performers were Deckers Outdoor Corporation (NYSE:DECK) which was down 83.46% to 155.10 in late trade, Accenture plc (NYSE:ACN) which lost 4.82% to settle at 337.04 and Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW) which was down 3.07% to 67.23 at the close.


The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Purple Biotech (NASDAQ:PPBT) which rose 1,737.91% to 7.37, Nuvve Holding Corp (NASDAQ:NVVE) which was up 772.43% to settle at 4.24 and  Iveda Solutions Inc  (NASDAQ:IVDA) which gained 622.34% to close at 1.73.


The worst performers were Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc (NASDAQ:OMEX) which was down 89.40% to 0.50 in late trade, Swvl Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SWVL) which lost 43.62% to settle at 3.05 and  NuCana  PLC (NASDAQ:NCNA) which was down 41.92% to 3.70 at the close.


Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1666 to 1151 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1870 rose and 1415 declined, while 130 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.


The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.74% to 17.61.


In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.48% or 12.55 to $2,596.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.38% or 0.95 to hit $69.97 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.31% or 0.95 to trade at $73.70 a barrel.


EUR/USD was unchanged 0.13% to 1.11, while USD/JPY rose 1.22% to 142.32.


The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.21% at 100.65.
