Visa (NYSE: V), Mastercard (NYSE: MA), and Fiserv (NASDAQ: FISV) recently joined the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA), a coalition assembled by the stablecoin infrastructure company Rain to establish common rules for agentic AI commerce. Let's see what that coalition seeks to accomplish -- and how investors can profit from that industry shift.

What is the Agentic Payments Alliance?

The APA consists of 26 companies and fintech innovators. In addition to Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv, its other founding members include Circle (NYSE: CRCL), the Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) Foundation, and Remitly (NASDAQ: RELY).

The APA's core goal is to establish shared industry standards for how autonomous AI agents manage their digital identities, process user loyalty programs, and detect fraud. It also seeks to proactively define the nascent industry's governance and frameworks before federal regulators step in and start writing their own rules for machine-to-machine payments.

How will the APA generate tailwinds for the industry?

Today, most online purchases are either made manually (via a web search) or via the recommendation of an AI chatbot (which passively provides links or suggestions). But with agentic commerce, AI agents proactively scour dozens of sites for products, calculate the final total, and handle the entire checkout process once the end user approves the purchase.

So instead of searching Amazon for the right product or asking ChatGPT for suggestions, a human customer would simply give an AI agent a set of criteria for the product they want, wait for the results, and approve the final purchase with a single click. AI agents can also resolve unauthorized, illegal, or disputed payments without human intervention, and they use stablecoins -- which are pegged to fiat currencies but don't require bank accounts -- to fund their own machine-to-machine payments.

According to Grand View Research, the agentic commerce market could grow at a 35.7% CAGR from 2026 to 2033. McKinsey estimates that agentic AI activity could reach $3 trillion to $5 trillion by 2030. But before the establishment of the APA, Visa, Mastercard, Fiserv, and other companies had all been developing their own separate protocols for agentic payments.

That early fragmentation could make it difficult for the market to expand. To resolve that bottleneck, the APA requires its traditional finance and blockchain members to develop cross-compatible platforms that can communicate seamlessly with one another.

Why is this good news for Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv?

For Visa and Mastercard, routing agentic transactions through their own tokenized networks (Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol and Mastercard's Agent Pay) ensures that they stay in the loop even as more payments shift from global card networks to blockchain-based platforms.

Visa and Mastercard are also trusted payment networks, so any agentic AI commerce transactions on their platforms should be considered legitimate rather than malicious. As the gatekeepers for those trusted transactions, Visa and Mastercard should lock in their merchants even as more consumers and businesses automate their shopping experiences with AI agents.

For Fiserv, which provides various payment processing services and millions of point-of-sale systems, joining the APA will enable its merchants to easily accept agentic AI payments without having to rebuild their infrastructure. That upgrade will increase the stickiness of its ecosystem and prevent its merchants from losing customers to AI-first sales channels.

It might seem hard to imagine consumers outsourcing their shopping lists to AI-powered agents. But just a few decades ago, it seemed like a far-fetched idea to do all of your shopping from a computer or a mobile phone. So while the rise of AI agents won't generate massive near-term tailwinds for companies like Visa, Mastercard, and Finserv, the launches of their own tokenized networks and the APA will keep them ahead of the technological curve.
