Apple Leadership Change Imminent: What Challenges Face New CEO Ternus, and Can He Lead Apple to Win the AI War?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - On September 1 ET, Apple (AAPL) will undergo its first CEO transition in nearly 15 years. Tim Cook transitions to Executive Chairman of the Board, and John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, officially takes over as CEO.

Who Is Ternus?

John Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has been with the company for about 25 years. He became Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and was promoted to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2021, long overseeing hardware engineering for products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. When announcing the CEO succession plan, Apple's board of directors specifically emphasized his experience in product development, engineering management, and long-term strategy.

Apple Remains Strong Under Ternus

According to Apple's fiscal third-quarter earnings report for fiscal 2026, revenue reached $109.4 billion, up 16% year-over-year, while diluted earnings per share were $2.02, up 29% year-over-year, setting a record for the June quarter. Among this, iPhone revenue was approximately $54.25 billion, up 21.7% year-over-year; Mac revenue was approximately $10.35 billion, up 28.7% year-over-year; and Services revenue was approximately $30.74 billion, up 12.1% year-over-year.

Therefore, Ternus's core challenge is not saving a declining business, but rather how to enable a company with a massive user base and strong cash flow to find its next growth driver in the era of AI and new hardware.

What Challenges Will Ternus Face?

The speed of AI productization is the primary test. Apple possesses AI technology foundations such as Apple Silicon, Neural Engine, and Core ML, but compared to rivals such as Google (GOOGL), OpenAI, and Microsoft (MSFT) that have established mature generative AI product ecosystems, its productization speed is relatively slow.

Apple officially unveiled its next-generation Apple Intelligence architecture at WWDC 2026 and announced a partnership with Google to integrate Gemini technology into the next generation of Apple Foundation Models. AI capabilities will combine on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute. Apple's current AI roadmap consists of in-house developed systems, chips, and privacy architectures alongside external model partnerships.

For Ternus, the real test is how to translate underlying technologies into product features that users will continuously use.

Hardware innovation needs the next growth engine. Apple has confirmed it will hold its fall launch event on September 9 with the theme "Surprise and shine." Reuters reported that the market expects Apple may launch its first foldable iPhone at the event, though Apple has not officially confirmed it so far. If a foldable iPhone finally debuts, it will be the first major product test for Ternus since taking office.

Services business faces coexisting regulatory pressures.In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, Apple's services revenue was approximately $30.74 billion, up 12% year-over-year. However, businesses such as the App Store face regulatory pressures like the EU's DMA and US antitrust lawsuits, which could impact its business model. Ternus needs to maintain growth and profitability in the services business amid regulatory changes.

Ternus's Task: Turning Hardware Advantage Into AI Advantage

In the past, Apple emphasized in-house AI models, but its strategy has clearly shifted by 2026. Apple has confirmed a partnership with Google to develop the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, incorporating Gemini into the Apple Intelligence architecture. Consequently, Ternus no longer faces a choice between "in-house development" or "collaboration", but rather how to maintain control over user experience, privacy, and the ecosystem after partnering.

Once the Apple Intelligence infrastructure is established, Siri serves as the primary gateway for users to experience the system. The new version of Siri released at WWDC 2026 shows improvements in contextual understanding and cross-app execution; it is currently still in the testing phase and will be rolled out to users in batches later. Only if Siri can upgrade from a voice assistant to an AI assistant capable of invoking apps and completing multi-step tasks can Apple Intelligence translate into a tangible competitive advantage for the iPhone ecosystem.

Ternus is familiar with Apple's core product development system, but competition in the AI era has shifted from hardware performance to comprehensive competition across chips, models, operating systems, app ecosystems, and cloud computing infrastructure. Ternus needs to leverage Apple's hardware, software, and ecosystem strengths to embed AI into billions of devices.

If Apple Intelligence can be deeply integrated into the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch, Apple's massive base of active device users will be its greatest advantage. Conversely, if AI features fail to deliver clear user value over the long term, the gap between Apple and rivals such as Google and OpenAI may continue to widen.

Four key areas to watch after the new CEO takes office

After Ternus officially takes office, investors can focus on four aspects:

First, the actual implementation speed and user adoption rate of Apple Intelligence;

Second, whether Siri AI can genuinely complete its upgrade;

Third, whether new hardware such as foldable iPhones can create a new growth curve;

Fourth, whether the services business can continue to grow under regulatory pressure.

Summary

The performance of Apple inherited by Ternus remains strong, with fiscal 2026 third-quarter revenue reaching $109.4 billion, as iPhone, Mac, and Services businesses all maintained growth. Over the past 15 years, Cook has built Apple into one of the world's largest and most profitable technology companies. Moving forward, the key question Ternus needs to address is whether Apple can leverage its vast hardware ecosystem and user base to establish a new growth logic in the AI era.

Ternus brings more than 20 years of hardware experience, but the true test lies in translating advantages in hardware, chips, operating systems, and ecosystem into competitiveness in the AI era. If the transition succeeds, AI will serve as a foundational pillar for Apple's next phase of growth; if progress is slow, the gap between Apple and rivals like Google and OpenAI will continue to be a key risk factor monitored by the market.
