Starlink users in the US and worldwide face a major outage

A broad network outage left Starlink users without an internet connection in parts of the United States and around the world.

Problems began around 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, when reports to DownDetector showed that users in many U.S. cities lost network access. Users said the outage stopped them from loading web pages, streaming video, or sending messages.

Starlink, the satellite-based internet system run by SpaceX, uses satellites in low‑Earth orbit to bring broadband to areas with few ground links. It has become key for people in remote spots and conflict zones, such as Ukraine.

The company’s website started showing an error message saying, “upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. retried and the latest reset reason: connection timeout.”

Before the site went down, it displayed a notice: “Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage. Our team is investigating.”

DownDetector data pointed to an outage in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Boston, Seattle, Detroit, San Francisco, Dallas, New York, Phoenix, Minneapolis, and Chicago. In Canada, reports from users in Toronto and Montreal also spiked. Beyond the US, a large number of outage reports came from Ukraine.

At press time, the DownDetector map has marked dozens of spots across North America and Europe.

The full scope of the outage is not clear yet

At this stage, the full scope of the outage is not clear. Posts on X and Reddit show people in the US, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Asia complaining about offline connections with messages that say “no healthy upstream.” Across several continents, users have said their connections got cut out without warning.

This is not Starlink’s first major outage, but such events have been rare. More details are expected soon.
