During its official launch yesterday, Dune Awakening, a multiplayer game developed by Funcom, received more than 142,000 concurrent gamers. SteamDB stats showed the game as the ninth most-played game on Steam.

Funcom CEO Rui Casais thanked the community and called the game a success, with a peak of more than 117,000 concurrent players before yesterday’s official launch.

The more expensive editions have been played since June 5, before the official launch at 7:00 am PST yesterday. The community keeps tabs on the game to see if it will surpass games like Elden Ring, Nightreign, and the all-powerful Bongo Cat.

The Funcom team celebrated the game’s success with mini cupcakes at the office, as shown on social media

Dune Awakening overtakes DOOM, Veilguard, and Assassin’s Creed

Funcom’s game had a good head start, with over 100,000 concurrent gamers during the weekend. The initial gamers comprised Deluxe and Ultimate Edition owners, with Standard gamers joining today after launch.

Funcom CEO Rui Casais said it was an unbelievable success that day one racked up 94,000 gamers. By Saturday, it had reached 106,000 gamers, and 117,000 on Sunday, a day before the official launch.

The game has surpassed other major releases that came out last year, including Dragon Age: Veilguard, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows in terms of concurrent gamers before launch.

One of the gamers revealed that after a few hours of playtime, he could see why the game was such a success. Even though he was still in the early sections, he was experiencing one of the most popular games for a survival MMO. He revealed a few bugs, which are extremely rare for such games.

On Sunday, Casais, Funcom CEO, said he never thought they would receive such a huge number during the head start period. He was thankful and felt humbled by the positive rating the game had received from the community, with more than 117,000 concurrent gamers joining on Sunday.

He added that the feedback from the gaming community awakened their development team, and they have been working around the clock to fix bugs and lower patch and queue times to make the overall experience smoother for everyone.

Rubi Casais believes community feedback made the game a success

Casais acknowledged that there have been queues at times, especially on Thursday, the first day of the headstart, and at peak times. He said that the gamers’ distribution across servers was a bit uneven and confirmed that they were working to find solutions to spread the load and ensure all gamers got to play.

The Dune Awakening servers were congested during peak hours, but it didn’t break the game.

Funcom CEO revealed on Sunday that the development team had already patched all the bugs raised and acknowledged the disruption that may have been caused. He confirmed that there will be shorter patching and downtimes going forward.

Dune Awakening is changing the narrative by fixing issues as they arise based on community feedback while giving gamers a smooth first impression. That is contrary to the previous releases, which have received bad ratings due to extremely bad launches full of glitches and bugs, according to Casais.

Steam User Tordenstorm, a survival game master and reviewer, reviewed Dune Awakening and outlined his impressions of the new MMO following the early access experience.

“ I have 1000s of hours in survival games (Ark, Enshrouded, Valheim, Minecraft, etc.) as a solo player, I can easily write that this is my favorite game of them all.”

-Tordenstorm, Steam Community reviewer

Dune Awakening has a consistent open world where gamers will fight to survive against the elements, craft powerful gear, and build a base. Gamers can also customize their play style with custom skill trees.
