  • Motley Fool Issues Rare "Total Conviction" Buy Alert ›

One of the liveliest ongoing debates on Wall Street is whether artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure spending will continue to grow at a good clip over the medium term. If it doesn't, some industry leaders will see revenue and earnings growth slow, and their share prices could sink. But if it does, some AI-focused companies still have plenty of room to run.

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), recently made comments that support the bullish outlook. Of course, Huang is hardly an unbiased observer. Still, it's worth paying attention to what he said and the potential implications for Nvidia and other AI leaders.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Neocloud demand is booming

First, a little bit of background on neocloud companies. Unlike traditional cloud computing providers like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) that offer a broad range of services, neoclouds specialize in renting out the compute power needed to develop and run AI models. Neoclouds became more prominent as the AI revolution took off, but there is more room for them to grow, at least if we believe the words of Jensen Huang. In a recent interview, the CEO of Nvidia said:

If you look at the fundamentals, the demand for the neoclouds is off the charts. Their capabilities are extraordinary, and so what is missing in the middle is the working capital to fuel that growth, to fund that growth.

There is a lot to unpack here. First, the great news. Demand for neocloud services being off the charts is a bullish sign for Nvidia. These neoclouds purchase GPUs (graphics processing units) from the company and rent out GPU compute to other corporations. Growing demand could force these companies to expand their capacity. That means they may keep buying Nvidia's GPUs.

But can they afford this massive AI build-out? That's the not-so-great news. As Huang pointed out, these companies may lack the capital necessary to purchase the infrastructure -- including GPUs -- to meet demand for their services.

Where will Nvidia go next?

Recent developments support Huang's view. Companies like CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV) and even Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ:SPCX) have said that there is more demand for their services than they can (or are willing to) provide, at least in the short term. Meanwhile, CoreWeave has raised more than $30 billion in debt and equity capital this year.

Note that the company is worth about $33 billion as of writing, so it has raised capital equivalent to almost 91% of its market cap in a single year. That points to the financial bottleneck Huang mentioned and to how some neocloud companies are looking to solve it. But what does all this mean for Nvidia's prospects?

One bullish scenario could go like this. CoreWeave and its neocloud peers will conjure up various ways to fund their massive AI build-outs. Perhaps they will borrow more, or resort to dilutive forms of financing (or both). Another possibility is that more competitors will enter the market upon seeing the massive, lucrative opportunity. The result: neocloud companies will continue to purchase the infrastructure necessary to meet demand for their services, and some of that money will flow directly into Nvidia's pockets.

Of course, this also assumes that the AI boom will continue unabated at least over the next few years. If it doesn't, neoclouds could significantly reduce spending, leading to lower demand for Nvidia's products. Which scenario is more likely? Probably something closer to the first one.

Soaring demand for neocloud services, the growing popularity of AI agents, and several other indicators support this. Medium-term projections for AI infrastructure spending remain high for these (and other) reasons. And Nvidia could be one of the biggest winners. So, it's not too late to invest in the stock, even after its amazing run in recent years.
