Finally, 1 Rare and Mostly Good Thing for Lucid Investors

Key Points

  • Drawing down inventory is part of a plan to target $1.4 billion in cash-flow improvements.

  • Lucid's net inventory carrying value has ballooned during the past two years.

  • Reducing its inventory will help the cash-strapped company extend its runway for operations.

Well, if you're a long-term Lucid (NASDAQ: LCID) investor, bless your fortitude, because it has been one bumpy journey. Lucid has likely tallied more operational problems than licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop -- if we could ever know. Lucid had a huge talent drain with executives leaving, a persistent cash burn problem, a delayed launch of its mainstream Cosmos vehicle and the midsize platform, and the list seems to go on and on. Yet one potentially positive development is that deliveries exceeded production last quarter. Let me show you why that's such a big deal.

Numbers never lie

Lucid produced 4,774 vehicles in the second quarter and 2,954 in the third quarter, a 38% decline. Meanwhile, deliveries declined only 3.7% from 3,953 in the second quarter to 3,806 in the third quarter. Now, for investors of rival Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN), this would be alarming, as it's trying to ramp production significantly for its recently launched R2 SUV. But for Lucid, it might be much needed.

The swing that should be noted is that during the second quarter, Lucid produced 821 more vehicles than it delivered, tying up crucially needed capital in increasingly worrisome inventory figures. That swung to 852 fewer vehicles produced than delivered in the third quarter -- a much-needed reversal. This suggests an inventory reduction, but to be fair, write-downs could also reduce reported inventory without actually freeing up much-needed cash.

Let me emphasize why this matters: At the end of the second quarter, Lucid reported $1.38 billion in inventory and only $3 billion in total liquidity. Those figures show how critical it is to convert excess inventory into cash to strengthen its financial position and extend its funding runway for operations. In fact, even Lucid told us this during its "operational reset" press release, when it targeted $1.4 billion in cash-flow improvements. Breaking that down, between $600 million and $800 million of that cash-flow improvement opportunity comes from inventory reductions, with the remaining opportunity split between about $500 million in capital expenditure reductions and roughly $200 million in operating expense reductions.

If Lucid can lower its inventory that significantly, it will make a material difference. Consider this: Lucid's net inventory carrying value -- which includes raw materials, work in progress, and finished goods -- jumped from $408 million at the end of 2024 to $1.11 billion at the end of 2025. As of June 30, that figure sat at $1.38 billion -- and that's a bit of a problem.

It's mostly good

Even if we remove part of that equation (raw materials and work in progress), Lucid's finished-goods inventory nearly tripled from $211 million at the end of 2024 to about $623 million as of June 30. Not only does this tie up much-needed capital for simply continuing operations, it also suggests a worse scenario in that demand for its vehicles -- which are some of the most advanced and impressive electric vehicles out there -- could be softening.

It's important to note that Lucid's goal of $1.4 billion in cash-flow improvements is a fine target, but it's more akin to making the company leaner than generating organic and/or incremental efficiencies. Further, lower production could partially offset these benefits by spreading fixed manufacturing overhead across fewer vehicles.

To put it bluntly: Lucid is in a rough spot, no doubt about it. It is mostly a good thing that we saw deliveries exceed production during the third quarter, but if excess inventory remains elevated while deliveries weaken, that's a red flag. The world is better off with Lucid's vehicles, but its business doesn't seem appealing to long-term investors right now, and it's going to take a very talented management team to turn this scenario around. Watch this one from the sidelines, investors.
