Dow: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source Motley_fool

Key Points

  • Net sales grew 13% year over year in the third quarter.

  • Management targets $1.3 billion in net self-help savings for 2027.

  • Dow reduced working capital to release over $400 million in cash.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Dow (NYSE:DOW) announced that net sales grew 13% year over year across all operating segments. Internal efficiency programs and disciplined pricing give the business direct control over its earnings trajectory during uncertain economic cycles.

Three takeaways from management stand out.

1. Cost-Cutting Programs Target $1.3 Billion in Savings

Management is restructuring global operations and eliminating 4,500 roles to streamline its cost structure. These internal self-help actions (operational efficiency programs within management control) shield earnings during broader economic downturns.

And we remain focused on our commitment to implement approximately $1.3 billion in net benefits this year as well as $1.3 billion in 2027.
-- Jeffrey L. Tate, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

2. Advanced Silicones Focus on High-Growth End Markets

Dow is investing in specialized downstream silicones (processed silicone materials engineered for specific end products) for data center cooling and electric vehicles. These high-value technologies carry faster payback schedules than basic commodity chemicals.

Our closed loop liquid cooling systems and advanced thermal fluids are serving markets that are growing at double digit rates.
-- Karen S. Carter, Chief Executive Officer

3. Ample Liquidity Protects Financial Standing Through 2029

The company maintains liquidity (available cash and borrowing capacity) of $14 billion while paying down debt ahead of schedule. Voluntary debt retirement and working capital management protect cash flows from elevated interest rates.

We have approximately $14 billion of liquidity and no substantive debt maturities until 2029, providing significant financial flexibility.
-- Jeffrey L. Tate, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Global chemical demand is recovering unevenly across regions, but operational discipline generates clear momentum. Advantaged raw material positions in North America and structural asset shutdowns in Europe strengthen long-term margins.

Our collective self help measures... are all delivering tangible results.
-- Karen S. Carter, Chief Executive Officer

Capital allocation prioritizes high-return downstream investments while eliminating uncompetitive upstream production.

We are making our portfolio more competitive by investing in advantaged businesses differentiated technologies, and low cost assets, while also moving decisively where we no longer have a clear path to sustainably compete and win.
-- Karen S. Carter, Chief Executive Officer
