What men collect between 62 and 70

The amount you receive depends on your earnings history and your claiming age. The Social Security Administration (SSA) calculates your benefit by averaging your wages across your 35 highest-earning years, adjusted for inflation, and running them through the primary insurance amount (PIA) formula.

The table below shows the average monthly amounts for men and women across the current beneficiary population. These figures reflect the December 2025 data period, the most recent data available, and represent individuals who are currently that age.

AgeMen's averageWomen's average
62$1,572.83$1,285.50
63$1,580.81$1,300.20
64$1,624.93$1,342.07
65$1,772.00$1,457.40
66$1,998.75$1,629.09
67$2,234.41$1,801.82
68$2,272.40$1,836.58
69$2,321.96$1,876.96
70$2,529.62$2,024.08

Why the averages differ

The higher average benefit for men reflects historical differences in lifetime earnings and the total number of years spent in the workforce. These variations in work history raise the baseline benefit for the typical man.

Men often receive fewer years of benefits than women who claim at the same age. A 65-year-old man is expected to live about 18 more years, while a woman of the same age is expected to live about 21 more years, according to the SSA.

The higher average check for men is critical for survivor benefits. Because a surviving spouse can step up to the higher of the two household benefits, the record of a higher-earning worker often determines the income a spouse receives later in life.

Annual adjustments can change these amounts. A 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will take effect in 2027, and that increase will add about $91 a month on top of the $2,529.62 average for 70-year-old men. Social Security is designed to replace only 40% of pre-retirement income, so most retirees need other sources to cover their costs.

What men should weigh when deciding when to claim Social Security

Men should consider their finances and life expectancy when deciding on the age at which they plan to sign up for Social Security. If you cannot afford to delay benefits or you have a short life expectancy, signing up early could make sense. If neither of those things is an issue, you might get a larger benefit by waiting beyond your initial eligibility age of 62 to apply.

Married men will need to consider how their claiming age will affect their spouse. Spouses may be eligible to claim a Social Security check on their partner's work record, worth up to one-half of what the worker qualifies for at their full retirement age (FRA) -- 67 for most workers today.

The catch is, your spouse cannot claim on your work record until you have signed up for retirement benefits. So it's worth sitting down with your partner to discuss when each of you plans to claim. Make sure you're on the same page, and touch base with each other if either one of you wants to change the plan down the road.
