Contrasting the global technology reach of Alibaba Group (NYSE:BABA) with the resilient physical footprint of Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE:DKS) reveals different paths for investors. Both companies represent unique ways to play consumer demand in 2026.

Alibaba is a digital giant centered on AI and cloud computing, while Dick's Sporting Goods has evolved into a global specialty retailer following its Foot Locker acquisition. Investors often compare them to weigh the high-growth potential of international tech against the steady, cash-generating power of established American retail leaders.

The case for Alibaba

Originally solely an online retailer, Alibaba Group is a global technology company focused on AI, cloud computing, and commerce. It operates massive digital marketplaces like Taobao and Tmall, which serve millions of consumers across China and international markets. The company also provides essential infrastructure for digital businesses through its extensive cloud division and logistics network.

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, revenue reached about $153.4 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of roughly 3% from the previous year. The company reported net income of approximately $15.5 billion for the same period. This level of profitability follows a slight decrease in net margin compared with the prior fiscal year when earnings were higher.

As of its March 2026 balance sheet, Alibaba maintained a conservative debt-to-equity ratio of nearly 0.2x. This ratio, which compares total debt to shareholder equity, suggests the company relies very little on borrowing. Its current ratio was roughly 1.3x, while free cash flow was negative $7.6 billion. This is a common sight among retail stocks investing heavily in long-term infrastructure. Many analysts also look at the Forward P/E, which measures a stock price against future earnings estimates.

The case for Dick's Sporting Goods

Dick's Sporting Goods is a leading omnichannel retailer that sells sports equipment, apparel, and footwear through multiple brand banners. Following its acquisition of Foot Locker, the company now operates over 3,100 store locations globally. A significant portion of its inventory strategy relies on its partnership with Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE), which accounts for roughly 31% of merchandise purchases.

In the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2026, revenue reached approximately $17.2 billion, which was an increase of about 28% compared with the prior fiscal year. The company reported net income of about $849.2 million for the period. While revenue grew significantly, net margin decreased to approximately 4.9% during this phase of integration and store expansion.

According to its January 2026 balance sheet, the company had a debt-to-equity ratio of roughly 1.4x. This metric indicates that the company uses more debt relative to its equity to fund operations. Its current ratio stood at approximately 1.5x, and the company generated free cash flow of more than $400 million in its latest fiscal year. Investors also track the P/S ratio, which measures market capitalization relative to sales over the past twelve months.

Risk profile comparison

Alibaba faces significant competition from other technology and e-commerce leaders in its primary markets. It must also navigate complex regulatory environments in various international regions where it operates. Geopolitical tensions continue to pose risks to its cross-border commerce and cloud computing growth strategies.

Dick's Sporting Goods is currently navigating integration and execution risks following its recent expansion, including a securities class action lawsuit. The company also carries risk related to its high vendor concentration with Nike. Additionally, the business is sensitive to changes in consumer discretionary spending and broader macroeconomic instability.

Valuation comparison

Dick's Sporting Goods appears to be the more affordable option based on both its sales and future earnings estimates.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Alibaba is a sprawling business these days, but sporting goods is not an insignificant portion of its retail offerings. The company has nearly 2,400 sporting goods retailers selling on its platform. Still, Alibaba is shifting to be more of a technology provider-- of cloud and AI services--than a retailer. It focuses on defending its cash-rich China e-commerce marketplaces, Taobao and Tmall, while funneling capital into higher-growth AI cloud and AI services. Alibaba is the public cloud leader in China and the owner of the Qwen open- and closed-source models. Yet its retail businesses are losing market share to Chinese rivals, which crimps the business's ability to fund money-losing AI model efforts. That means its AI cloud and compute services are the one impressive growth center for the business. It grew 45% year over year in that sector.

Overall, however, the business is growing more slowly, with revenue up about 10% in the current fiscal year, although net income is likely to drop by close to 20%, according to analyst consensus estimates in Chinese renminbi.

Dick's, meanwhile, remains primarily a sporting goods retailer. The Dick's business had about 7% market share before the pandemic and ended its fiscal 2026 with 9% share, according to analyst firm Argus. That's very good growth considering the highly competitive sporting goods market, with Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), and others heavily into selling the same category.

The company believes footwear is the growth engine for the whole company, hence their enthusiasm over the Foot Locker acquisition. Foot Locker will help DKS to strengthen relationships with brands like Nike and hopefully lead to access to higher-profile product launches. Foot Locker also gives Dick's a footprint in cities, where it is difficult to open a big-box store.

So which is the better buy? Alibaba operates in the hyper-competitive Chinese market and lacks the momentum to expand beyond the region. Thanks to the Foot Locker buy and improved merchandising, Dick's should add $5 billion in sales this fiscal year, to more than $22 billion, and see net income get over $1 billion. Generally speaking, the market doesn't love conglomerates like the one Alibaba is becoming, and AI will require massive investment to be competitive. A niche business like Dick's, which is more affordable by its stock ratios (above), is the better choice in 2026.
