Key Points

  • North American utility sales increased 23% in the third quarter.

  • Valmont raised full-year adjusted diluted earnings per share guidance.

  • The infrastructure backlog reached $1.8 billion in the third quarter.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 20, 2026, Valmont (NYSE:VMI) announced net sales increased 5.5% year over year to $1.1 billion. The utility market continues to drive long-term grid demand while steel inflation creates short-term margin lag across infrastructure contracts. Three things management said stand out.

1. Utility Customers Are Entering a Multiyear Grid Expansion Cycle

North America utility sales increased 23% as utilities expand capacity and modernize electrical grids. Long-term pipeline conversion pushed the infrastructure backlog (unfilled customer orders scheduled for future delivery) to $1.8 billion.

My recent conversations with key utility customers reinforce our view that we are still early in a multi-year investment cycle.
-- Avner Applbaum, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Input Cost Inflation Temporarily Delays Infrastructure Profit Margins

Steel costs rose sharply above prior-year levels, forcing the company to rely on contractual pass-throughs (agreements that allow material price increases to be passed on to customers). Margin expansion temporarily lags until revised pricing reaches billing cycles.

When input costs stabilize, we expect pricing will catch up and support infrastructure margin expansion. This usually takes 2 to 3 quarters to fully realize.
-- John L. Schwietz, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. Storm Repairs and Aftermarket Sales Offset Agriculture Market Weakness

North American agricultural revenue grew 15.8% as storm-replacement activity increased sales through local dealer networks. Demand for aftermarket offerings (replacement parts and services sold after an initial equipment purchase) provided additional stability while international machinery markets remained soft.

Strong replacement activity contributed to the quarter's growth and demonstrated the value of the dealer network. These relationships also support our strategy to grow aftermarket parts and technology strengthening the business even before a broader market recovery.
-- Avner Applbaum, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Utility demand continues to expand as data center power needs accelerate, and management isn't hiding its focus on disciplined execution. The company relies on its galvanizing network (protective steel-coating facilities) and engineering expertise while monitoring pricing discipline and the timing of cost pass-through.

Across Valmont, our priorities as we look ahead are clear. Efficiently ramp the capacity we are adding, align our operations with demand across the portfolio, and recover higher input costs through disciplined pricing.
-- Avner Applbaum, President and Chief Executive Officer

Capital allocation centers on targeted utility manufacturing expansions while preserving financial flexibility and shareholder returns.

This balanced deployment of capital reflects our focus on investing in the highest return growth opportunities, while maintaining financial flexibility and returning capital to shareholders.
-- John L. Schwietz, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
