On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 15, 2026, Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BNY) announced that its earnings per share grew 24% year over year to $2.34, and assets under custody and administration was $63.4 trillion, a 10% year-over-year increase as a result of higher market values and net client inflows.

A durable financial institution relies on operating leverage -- growing revenue faster than operating expenses -- to widen profit margins over time. That efficiency lets the bank reinvest capital into new tech platforms while returning cash to shareholders. Three key takeaways from management explain how that strategy is unfolding.

1. Revenue Growth Is Driving Expanding Operating Leverage

Operating leverage measures how effectively a company converts top-line growth into bottom-line profit expansion. Management raised its full-year targets because revenue growth is outpacing expense growth across core fee-based divisions.

We now expect to generate nearly 500 basis points of positive operating leverage in 2026, up from 400 basis points just 3 months ago, and clearly up from the slightly over 100 basis points we guided to at the beginning of the year.
-- Dermot McDonogh, Chief Financial Officer

2. Artificial Intelligence Is Creating Internal Processing Capacity

Deploying artificial intelligence, or software systems capable of performing tasks that normally require human intervention, helps the bank automate repetitive workflows. Rather than treating technology purely as a cost-cutting tool, management uses Eliza -- its enterprise artificial intelligence platform -- to free up staff for higher-value client work.

Over the past quarter, we've continued to move AI deeper into the processes that run our company. By deeply understanding our activity, including process steps, system interactions, workflow patterns and more, Eliza is helping our teams reimagine how work gets done.
-- Robin Vince, Chief Executive Officer

3. Digital Transfer Capabilities Bridge Traditional and Blockchain Assets

The bank is expanding its transfer agency operations -- the administrative recordkeeping systems that track fund ownership and shareholder balances -- onto distributed ledger networks. That infrastructure allows institutional clients to issue tokenized money market funds, which represent investment shares as digital assets on a blockchain.

In July, we announced the launch of our global Digital Transfer Agency capabilities, which extend our leading position in traditional fund servicing to the on-chain world, enabling a unified client servicing experience and ultimately growth into new asset classes and technologies.
-- Robin Vince, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Broad-based demand is lifting activity across core asset servicing platforms, pushing operating margins higher.

Our work to enable higher performance, greater connectivity between our platforms and more seamless delivery of holistic solutions from across BNY to our clients continues, and we can already see that these foundational investments have laid the groundwork for our further growth.
-- Robin Vince, Chief Executive Officer

Platform integration and enterprise scale provide clear competitive advantages, while disciplined cost management keeps efficiency gains on track.

While we remain mindful of the dynamic operating environment, we continue to see our investments and execution translate into stronger client engagement, growth across our platforms and greater scalability.
-- Dermot McDonogh, Chief Financial Officer
