Bitcoin’s one-year volatility has fallen to 43%, a level that now sits within the range of S&P 500 stocks, according to a new Grayscale report.

The comparison could help ease concerns among traditional investors, as inflation data keeps markets on edge.

What Volatility Means for Bitcoin

Volatility measures how much an asset’s price moves over time. Realized volatility, the measure Grayscale uses, tracks actual price swings over the past year.

Grayscale’s analysis puts Bitcoin’s current level in context. Its one-year realized volatility stood at 43%, down from 81% five years ago and below the 64% ten-year average.

The report also places that figure alongside stocks. Bitcoin’s volatility over the past year fell within the range of S&P 500 components. It was lower than the volatility of 19% of the index’s stocks. Even so, it remains above most individual names, and Grayscale says it no longer sits in a separate risk category.

The firm links the decline to market maturation. Deeper liquidity, institutional participation, and regulated access through spot ETFs have smoothed out extreme swings.

Perception is the report’s central message: Bitcoin’s reputation for high volatility may deter traditional investors.

Can Bitcoin Be Managed Like a Large-Cap Stock Today?

Grayscale says the comparison matters for investors who already handle volatile positions. Position sizing, a standard tool in equity portfolios, can apply to Bitcoin too.

The latest price action shows why the debate matters. Bitcoin briefly fell near $80,000 after September CPI came in at 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% expected.

Traders feared the Federal Reserve could keep rates high or raise them further. Still, BeInCrypto data shows Bitcoin recovering to about $82,285, up 0.81% over 24 hours and 1% over the week.

Grayscale adds a caution, however. One year of data cannot reveal how Bitcoin behaves across full market cycles, so the report invites a measured view.

For investors used to volatile large-cap stocks, Bitcoin’s swings may look less intimidating than history suggests.
