Your net worth is a complete snapshot of your personal finances in a single number. To calculate your net worth, take all of your assets -- investment accounts, cash savings, and the value of any property you own -- and subtract any liabilities you may have -- credit card balances, a car loan, a mortgage, or a student loan.

Ideally, your net worth will increase over time, although it probably won't go up in a straight line. But consistently saving more than you spend and investing the difference is a solid recipe for building a very large net worth. Eventually, you'll find the power of compounding does most of the work for you when it comes to growing your net worth. That's how the wealthiest Americans continue to get wealthier.

While it's best to measure your financial progress against your past self, if you want a goal to shoot for in the future, you might want to know how wealthy you'd have to be to be considered in the top 5% of American households.

Here's the net worth that puts you in the top 5%

The Federal Reserve conducts a survey of American household finances every three years. The survey covers everything across income, investments, savings, other assets, and debt. The most recent update to the survey includes data from late 2025 and was released this month. While a bit delayed, it offers the most complete picture of American household finances of any other source.

As of late 2025, the minimum net worth required to place a household in the top 5% was $4,926,500. That number might seem well out of reach for the average reader, but there are a few important details to consider about the types of households that make it into the top 5%.

First, it takes a long time to get that wealthy. The average net worth increases with age. That should make sense, intuitively. More time means more opportunity to pay down debt, invest, and let compounding do the hard work of growing your net worth.

It's also no coincidence that the median household in the top 10% by net worth has median stock holdings of $1,698,600 and combined retirement account balances of $1,395,000. They're investors, and investments take a long time to grow.

It's also worth pointing out that an expensive primary residence is a big contributor to the ultra-wealthy's net worth. The median value of primary residences among the top 10% of households is around $1 million, while they carry just $303,000 of mortgage debt. That said, the inflation-adjusted value of those more expensive houses hasn't climbed as much over the past three years compared to lower-priced entry-level housing.

How to reach the top 5%

Before you can get to the top 5% of the wealthiest Americans, you should aim to reach a median level of wealth. For 2025, the median net worth for all families was $216,100. If you haven't reached that level yet, there are a few things you can do to put yourself on a path to median net worth and beyond.

If you have any high-interest debt, such as outstanding credit card balances, it's worth paying it off as soon as possible. Paying down debt accumulating 30% interest is going to provide a better return than practically any investment. The only exception may be receiving the 401(k) match from your employer, which can provide an instant boost to your investment of 50% to 100%.

Investing in stocks both inside and outside of retirement accounts has been the key for most households reaching multi-millionaire status. Consistently putting your cash to work in stocks every month can add up quickly, and you'll find compounding doing a lot of the work after a few years. Warren Buffett's longtime business partner, Charlie Munger, said you should do everything you can to get your first $100,000 invested. It gets a lot easier after that.

If you're still young, you might consider opportunities that could decrease your net worth in the short term with a likelihood of paying off in a higher net worth in the long run. That could include taking out student loans to advance your education and open up new employment opportunities. Alternatively, you could take a chance on starting your own business. Some 44% of households in the top 10% of net worth held business equity compared to just 12% for everyone else. Note that most businesses fail, but they can be a great path to wealth with limited downside if built conservatively.

It's worth pointing out that owning a house is not a requirement to build a high net worth. A home is not a great investment, and it is often the case that continuing to rent while investing in the financial markets is a better wealth builder over the long run. With the high cost of housing in the U.S. right now, continuing to rent could make sense. That said, if you really want to own a home, the difference isn't so big that it should deter you.

The key to making it to the top 5% is consistency and patience. Even if you don't reach multimillionaire status, staying disciplined with your finances will set you up for success when it comes time to retire.
