Alphabet: Steady Upward Revenue Growth

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) primarily generates revenue by selling digital advertising space across its Google internet search engine and video properties.

Between July and October 2026, it introduced the newly developed Pixel 11 hardware series alongside updated operating system software integrations, and it navigated a proposed antitrust remedy framework formally filed by the United States Department of Justice regarding its core internet search operations.

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) primarily earns its revenue by displaying targeted advertisements to users across its interconnected social media applications.

Between July and October 2026, it debuted a new line of wearable hardware products including lightweight Meta VR Glasses for consumers, while the United Kingdom Office of Communications formally opened an official legal investigation into the specific child safety assessment protocols governing its various interactive mobile applications.

Why Revenue Matters for Investors

Revenue provides investors with a metric showing the total money a business collects before management deducts any operating expenses. It serves as a fundamental baseline measure of overall consumer demand and business growth.

Foolish Take

Alphabet and Meta Platforms depend on advertising for the bulk of their revenue. That's why they both experience a spike in the fourth quarter, when advertisers raise their spending to capture customers during the holiday shopping season.

Now, both are battling to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom. Alphabet and Meta are heavily employing AI in their respective advertising platforms to help advertisers achieve strong performance. Doing so allows them to maintain their dominance in the digital advertising arena, where Google remains the top player and Meta is in second place.

That said, 2026 could be the pivotal year when Meta pulls ahead. The social media giant is growing ad sales at a faster clip than Google. As a result, Meta is projected to surpass Alphabet in advertising revenue for the first time this year, with global ad sales expected to reach $243.46 billion, exceeding Google's projected $239.54 billion. This would be a stunning transition, and validation that Meta's AI automation investments are producing superior results to its longtime ad rival.
