When investors talk about artificial intelligence (AI), Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) might be the first business that comes to mind. There's a good reason for that. In the past five years, its shares have climbed 1,000%. Because the company is a critical provider of AI hardware, it will continue to capture the market's attention.

But where could this AI stock be in five years?

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

Incredible demand is driving the financials

The AI infrastructure build-out is in full swing and Nvidia has benefited more than any other company as the major hyperscalers are in a race to build more data centers. Nvidia Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress has estimated that combined capital expenditures will total "nearly $800 billion in 2026." The upward trajectory is unmistakable.

The largest cost component of these facilities is the graphics processing units that Nvidia specializes in, with Vera Rubin being the latest platform. Nvidia has over 80% share of the market for data center chips. It has, unsurprisingly, registered eye-popping demand in recent years that has driven its financials to new heights.

Nvidia reported $96.2 billion of revenue in its fiscal second quarter (ended July 26), a figure that rose 106% year over year. And its net income was up 126%. Pricing power has been a notable contributor to these numbers.

According to analyst estimates, Nvidia's revenue is set to grow at a compound annual rate of 61% between fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2029, which will close in early 2029. Furthermore, its diluted earnings per share are projected to rise at a yearly clip of 65% during that time. These metrics present an incredibly powerful tailwind that can lift the stock higher.

The biggest question mark is durability

Nvidia is worth $5.5 trillion, and that market capitalization makes it the world's most valuable company. Investors are probably wondering if there's any upside left. What might be going on in late 2031, for example?

To ponder that, first, consider the stock's valuation. This "Magnificent Seven" stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of only 25. That's 27% more expensive than the S&P 500 index. Given that Nvidia's earnings growth is astronomically higher than the benchmark's average, that is a gap worth highlighting.

The valuation isn't much higher because the market is questioning the durability of Nvidia's monster success. There is no telling how long the AI boom will last.

While Nvidia's stock could easily be a double (and potentially a lot more) in five years if the momentum holds up, that outcome is full of extreme uncertainty.
