Alphabet Shares Drop 3% Breaking Key Support, Technical Breakdown Risks Further 18% Decline

TradingKey - Alphabet's soaring capital expenditures and negative cash flow hit its stock price, risking a further downward move to test support at $270.

On July 23, Eastern Time, pressured by sky-high capital expenditures (CapEx) and cash flow anxieties, Google's parent company Alphabet ( GOOGL / GOOG) fell sharply by 3.5% in pre-market trading, losing the $333 support level established in late June, and was temporarily trading at $329.89.

Prior to the second-quarter earnings release, Alphabet's stock price consolidated mainly at the high end of its key support range of $330–$370. Following the post-market earnings release, Alphabet's stock price broke down through its key support level, triggering some technical stop-loss selling and programmatic trading sell-offs.

According to chart pattern theory in technical analysis, Alphabet's next strong support level lies near $270. This was the pullback low area at the end of March this year, as well as the lowest point of the year, representing about 18% further downside from the current level.

Although Alphabet's Q2 revenue, profit, and performance across various business segments were highly impressive, its stock price fell instead of rising. The key factor is that its full-year CapEx guidance was significantly raised again, with 2026 capital expenditures rising from $180 billion–$190 billion to $195 billion–$205 billion, weighing on its short-term cash flow options, prompting capital outflows for short-term gains, and making its short-term growth a burden on the stock.

Despite some investors' anxiety over Alphabet's AI spending, many Wall Street investment banks do not share this view. Major banks like Bank of America and Morgan Stanley believe that the 82% surge in Cloud proves its strong AI monetization capabilities, and that the high CapEx is meant to meet the supply-constrained AI demand, maintaining their 'Buy' ratings. Supported by investment banks, Alphabet's stock price could quickly reclaim this level in the short term, so it remains to be seen whether it can close back above $333 this week.
