Raoul Pal Says AI Spending Has No Ceiling. Are Tech Stocks in Danger?

Source Beincrypto

Raoul Pal believes the world’s biggest technology companies can keep spending on artificial intelligence almost indefinitely. However, their latest earnings show how expensive that ambition is becoming.

Alphabet shares plunged after Wednesday’s earnings, as AI investments pushed quarterly free cash flow to negative $9.07 billion. Microsoft shares rose after reporting $18.6 billion in positive free cash flow.

The difference raises an important question for AI stock investors: how long can Big Tech keep spending hundreds of billions before the returns become clear?

The question is now more critical as China’s AI bubble just popped and crashed its stock market.

Why Raoul Pal Believes AI Spending Has No Limit

The Real Vision CEO argued that technology giants have enough financial strength to sustain the biggest infrastructure expansion in decades.

“It’s a self-reinforcing loop,” Pal explained.

His argument is that Companies use the AI technology they develop, become more productive, and generate higher cash flow. They reinvest that money into even more AI infrastructure.

Pal estimates their debt at roughly 3.5% of their stock-market value.

“They’re barely in debt at all,” he said.

He compares the expansion to the railroad boom, which lasted 35 years, and believes demand for computing power could keep growing.

What This Means for AI Stocks

For shareholders, the immediate concern is whether these enormous budgets will deliver enough profit.

Amazon expects to spend about $220 billion in 2026, while Alphabet has budgeted up to $205 billion. The figures include infrastructure investments beyond AI.

The latest earnings highlight the divide.

Microsoft’s Azure cloud revenue grew 48%, supporting investor confidence. Alphabet’s cloud revenue more than doubled, yet its spending overwhelmed cash generation.

Both companies are expanding AI. Their shares received sharply different reactions.

Could Rising Debt Threaten the AI Boom?

Pal’s optimism faces a growing challenge from credit markets.

Union Bancaire Privée estimates that five major hyperscalers will spend $820 billion in 2026, exceeding their projected $750 billion operating cash flow.

The Bank of England has also warned that AI infrastructure increasingly relies on borrowing and complex financing arrangements.

That makes continued revenue growth essential. Rising borrowing costs could eventually put pressure on AI investments.

What Is the Outlook for AI Stocks?

Amazon’s October 29 earnings provide the next test.

Strong cloud demand and improving cash flow would strengthen Pal’s argument. Further cash burn could raise questions about valuations and future spending.

The consequences could extend to Bitcoin miners such as MARA and CleanSpark, which are expanding into AI infrastructure.

Former BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes has warned of an AI overbuild followed by a crash and potential bailout.

For investors, the coming quarters will show whether AI’s growing revenue can support its extraordinary costs.
