WTI snaps two-day losing streak amid fresh Middle East developments

  • WTI rebounds above $100, reversing two-day losses as Middle East tensions fuel supply concerns.
  • A claimed Saudi refinery strike and reports of possible US action against Iran keep geopolitical risks elevated.
  • Iran signals openness to diplomacy, while traders await Sunday’s OPEC+ meeting.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rebounds on Wednesday, reversing losses recorded over the previous two days as persistent Middle East tensions keep a geopolitical risk premium embedded in Oil prices. At the time of writing, the US crude benchmark trades around $102.25 a barrel, up more than 2.50% on the day.

The advance comes after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said they had struck Saudi Arabia’s largest Oil refinery with a missile on Tuesday. Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the claimed attack on the 550,000-barrel-per-day facility.

Adding to those fears, the Wall Street Journal reported that Washington had warned Gulf states to prepare for a possible short, intense military campaign against Iran after the US midterm elections on November 3. US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that “anything is possible” when reporters asked about a potential attack on Iran after the elections.

Diplomatic efforts nevertheless continue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on X that Iran “continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed” and remains in close contact with intermediaries over ideas to implement its seven-day plan in less than a week. The proposal calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting talks if the US agrees to Iran’s demands.

Earlier on Wednesday, Reuters reported that Qatari mediators had presented Iran with a new draft agreement in Tehran on Sunday. Iran was reviewing the proposal and was expected to respond by the end of the week. However, an Iranian official dismissed the proposal as unacceptable.

The World Bank’s latest outlook also highlighted the strain on global supplies. It forecasts a 5.2% decline in Oil supply in 2026, the largest drop in more than four decades outside the 2020 recession, and a 32% rise in energy prices to a four-year high. The bank warned that renewed Middle East escalation or continued damage to Russian Oil infrastructure could push energy prices higher.

On the data front, US crude Oil inventories fell by 1.462 million barrels, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), exceeding expectations for a 300,000-barrel draw. This followed a 3.061 million-barrel decline the previous week.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s OPEC+ meeting, where producers are expected to keep December output targets unchanged, according to sources cited by Reuters.

WTI Oil FAQs

WTI Oil is a type of Crude Oil sold on international markets. The WTI stands for West Texas Intermediate, one of three major types including Brent and Dubai Crude. WTI is also referred to as “light” and “sweet” because of its relatively low gravity and sulfur content respectively. It is considered a high quality Oil that is easily refined. It is sourced in the United States and distributed via the Cushing hub, which is considered “The Pipeline Crossroads of the World”. It is a benchmark for the Oil market and WTI price is frequently quoted in the media.

Like all assets, supply and demand are the key drivers of WTI Oil price. As such, global growth can be a driver of increased demand and vice versa for weak global growth. Political instability, wars, and sanctions can disrupt supply and impact prices. The decisions of OPEC, a group of major Oil-producing countries, is another key driver of price. The value of the US Dollar influences the price of WTI Crude Oil, since Oil is predominantly traded in US Dollars, thus a weaker US Dollar can make Oil more affordable and vice versa.

The weekly Oil inventory reports published by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Energy Information Agency (EIA) impact the price of WTI Oil. Changes in inventories reflect fluctuating supply and demand. If the data shows a drop in inventories it can indicate increased demand, pushing up Oil price. Higher inventories can reflect increased supply, pushing down prices. API’s report is published every Tuesday and EIA’s the day after. Their results are usually similar, falling within 1% of each other 75% of the time. The EIA data is considered more reliable, since it is a government agency.

OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) is a group of 12 Oil-producing nations who collectively decide production quotas for member countries at twice-yearly meetings. Their decisions often impact WTI Oil prices. When OPEC decides to lower quotas, it can tighten supply, pushing up Oil prices. When OPEC increases production, it has the opposite effect. OPEC+ refers to an expanded group that includes ten extra non-OPEC members, the most notable of which is Russia.
