Mexican Peso rout deepens as Iran tensions push USD/MXN toward 18.70

Source Fxstreet
  • USD/MXN surges 1.49% to 18.70, approaching an 11-month high.
  • Escalating US-Iran tensions trigger safe-haven flows into the Dollar.
  • Narrowing US-Mexico rate differential threatens Peso carry-trade appeal.

The Mexican Peso weakened for the second straight day, with losses of over 1.49% against the US Dollar, as the US-Iran conflict continues to underpin Oil prices, increasing the chances that the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates to control high inflation. The USD/MXN trades at 18.70, near 11-month highs.

Mexican Peso suffers sharp losses as geopolitical risks and narrowing rate spreads fuel Dollar demand

An escalation of the US-Iran conflict seems to take its toll on the Peso. Recent news reported that a US official said the State Department is preparing to issue an order to depart for some personnel and family members at US embassies near the Persian Gulf.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister said that Iran is ready to give diplomacy another chance, but if the US chooses war, it'll result in an even greater strategic failure. In the meantime, Fars reported multiple explosions heard in Sirik, with the origin and nature of these sounds unknown.

As tensions in the Middle East rise, market participants usually sell risk-sensitive currencies, such as the Mexican Peso, and flee towards the safety of the US Dollar.

Also, the narrowing of the interest rate differential between the US and Mexico supports further upside in the USD/MXN pair. Towards the end of 2026, the rates differential will narrow from 250 basis points to 200, as the Fed is expected to hike in December, while the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) is projected to hold rates unchanged in 2026 and towards the end of 2027, as expected by analysts according to Citi Mexico Expectations Survey.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said a trade deal with the US was “very close”, though some issues remained unresolved. Her counterpart, US President Donald Trump, said that a “great trade deal with Mexico is very close.

The news is positive for Mexico: a swift resolution of trade and tariff issues with its largest trading partner, the US, would support the peso. It follows an October 15 Wall Street Journal report that progress on tariffs and a trade deal had stalled.

Investors await Mexico’s October Retail Sales and Mid-Month Inflation data. In the US, the docket features jobless claims for the week ending October 17, S&P Global Flash PMIs, and the University of Michigan’s final October Consumer Sentiment reading.

USD/MXN Price Forecast: Technical outlook

Chart Analysis USD/MXN
USD/MXN daily chart

In the daily chart, USD/MXN trades at 18.6908, extending its advance well above the latest triple simple moving average cluster around 17.5087, which now underpins a bullish near‑term bias. Price stands comfortably above the prior horizontal floor at 16.8866, while the Relative Strength Index (14) holds in elevated territory near 73, hinting at strong but increasingly stretched upside momentum as the pair pushes further away from its medium‑term averages.

On the downside, initial support appears at the triple simple moving averages near 17.51, followed by the more distant horizontal line at 16.89 if a deeper correction unfolds. While no nearby mapped resistance levels cap the move for now, the overbought RSI suggests that any further rally from current levels could be prone to consolidation or a pullback toward the 17.50 region before bulls attempt another leg higher.

Mexican Peso FAQs

The Mexican Peso (MXN) is the most traded currency among its Latin American peers. Its value is broadly determined by the performance of the Mexican economy, the country’s central bank’s policy, the amount of foreign investment in the country and even the levels of remittances sent by Mexicans who live abroad, particularly in the United States. Geopolitical trends can also move MXN: for example, the process of nearshoring – or the decision by some firms to relocate manufacturing capacity and supply chains closer to their home countries – is also seen as a catalyst for the Mexican currency as the country is considered a key manufacturing hub in the American continent. Another catalyst for MXN is Oil prices as Mexico is a key exporter of the commodity.

The main objective of Mexico’s central bank, also known as Banxico, is to maintain inflation at low and stable levels (at or close to its target of 3%, the midpoint in a tolerance band of between 2% and 4%). To this end, the bank sets an appropriate level of interest rates. When inflation is too high, Banxico will attempt to tame it by raising interest rates, making it more expensive for households and businesses to borrow money, thus cooling demand and the overall economy. Higher interest rates are generally positive for the Mexican Peso (MXN) as they lead to higher yields, making the country a more attractive place for investors. On the contrary, lower interest rates tend to weaken MXN.

Macroeconomic data releases are key to assess the state of the economy and can have an impact on the Mexican Peso (MXN) valuation. A strong Mexican economy, based on high economic growth, low unemployment and high confidence is good for MXN. Not only does it attract more foreign investment but it may encourage the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) to increase interest rates, particularly if this strength comes together with elevated inflation. However, if economic data is weak, MXN is likely to depreciate.

As an emerging-market currency, the Mexican Peso (MXN) tends to strive during risk-on periods, or when investors perceive that broader market risks are low and thus are eager to engage with investments that carry a higher risk. Conversely, MXN tends to weaken at times of market turbulence or economic uncertainty as investors tend to sell higher-risk assets and flee to the more-stable safe havens.
